It is always good to have a lonely planet
You never get it wrong with lonely planet. It gave a lot of info as expected. It also saved one day in Jordan. We didn’t plan it, so at breakfast I read the guide, i picked a nice resort and we spent a very good day on dead see

Good to stash in your backpack, but cross reference with other sources.
We just got back from Jordan/Israel/Egypt/Turkey.For maps and sightseeing, this will do in a pinch, and we used this as a backup when our research wasn't as accurate as we had hoped or plans had changed. But since there are so many countries in this book, you have to use the specific country guides LP offers for more details. Tripadvisor and wikitravel has stuff that LP doesn't and vice versa. This guide had the best falafel in Amman, and the fish sandwich boats in Istanbul, but we didn't think a couple of restaurants in Cairo deserved a Top Choice pick. Some of the hotels/hostels we chose from this guide were booked solid, so we had to try other sites to find a place to sleep. So this book is really about highlights, but it suited our multi-country vacation just fine.

bought as a gift, but Lonely planet is usually spot on as a travel guide

Good, but could be better
I travel lots and I take a Lonely Plant guide with me to most places. I used this book and went to Turkey. A place like Istanbul needs to be updated regularly as it changes a lot in a short time. As soon as hostels, hotels, restaurants and shops know that they're in the guide, their prices go up and the quality of service drops. It's hard to rely on the book for good recommendations unless they keep reviewing it. All in all, well written, but I noticed a lack of historical background in the book for certain touristic sites.
