Short term replacements for malfunctioning wired alarms.
I bought these to stand in for a little time before I could get my wired system fixed. I didn't want to risk being without any alarms for the time in between and these were a good budget option for this. I think they look good and modern enough and the alarms are loud enough when tested. Fortunately, I haven't had any fires so can't speak as to how quick they will trigger, but I trust the regulations mean that these will be reliable and would work in a real fire. Overall: I'm happy to recommend these alarms.

Reliable Peace of Mind at a Sensible Price
Having lived through both a false alarm nightmare and a close-call kitchen incident, I’ve become borderline obsessive about ensuring our home’s smoke detectors are not only compliant but actually work when it matters most. Over the years, I’ve tested models from Kidde, FireAngel, and X-Sense, and while each had merits, many either broke down too early, gave off ghost alarms at 2am, or made replacing batteries so tedious I ended up ignoring them—risky, I know. So when I came across the Ruan 9V Battery Photoelectric Smoke Alarm with a supposed 10-year sensor life, I bought it as a low-stakes test. For the price, I wasn't expecting much—but I’ve since fitted four more around the house, and here's why. First off, installation is surprisingly fuss-free. It took me all of five minutes to fit it above the kitchen entrance. The included screws and plugs are decent quality, and the alarm mounts firmly with a satisfying twist-on mechanism. What stood out immediately was how lightweight and unobtrusive it is—especially ideal for tight hallway ceilings or rented spaces where minimal intrusion matters. A small thing, but the design blends into our décor without looking industrial or cheap. In terms of function, this unit uses photoelectric sensing, which I specifically prefer over ionisation types. Photoelectric detectors are more sensitive to smouldering fires and are generally slower to trigger from false alarms like burnt toast or steam—something we had issues with using older FireAngel models. I deliberately boiled water with the lid off underneath it as a test and it didn’t trigger—good sign. But when I lit a candle and covered it to simulate smoke, it went off within seconds. The alarm tone is a piercing 85dB—loud enough to hear from upstairs but not so shrill that it causes panic or discomfort, which is something I noticed with one of the older Kidde units. It runs off a standard 9V replaceable battery, included in the box, with a low battery chirp feature that’s clear and easy to identify. I’d personally prefer a longer battery lifespan—like 5 or 10 years—but the upside is that you’re in control and can swap batteries without replacing the whole device. In our case, I opted for a Duracell 9V instead, since I trust its performance over the included generic one. The alarm also includes a visible LED pulse indicator so you know it’s active. That’s useful for those of us who like confirmation without having to test manually every week. One thoughtful aspect is the prominent, easy-to-press test button. I've tried models where pressing the test function felt like pushing a thumbtack into concrete. Here, the button responds instantly and resets smoothly. I’ve integrated monthly tests into our home safety routine now, and every time it reassures me that the unit’s responsive and working properly. Where it really earns its value, however, is the price-to-performance ratio. At under £7, it’s dramatically more affordable than competitors offering the same core features. Compared to the £15–£25 models I’ve used in the past from bigger brands, there’s little functional difference. What you're not getting here is a mute button or smart home integration—but frankly, I find both overengineered. I don’t need a phone notification to know I’ve burnt a crumpet. That said, I wouldn’t recommend this for places with very high ceilings or odd airflow patterns, where a more powerful unit or interconnected system might be required. Also, for kitchens or bathrooms specifically, placement is key—avoid directly above a hob or shower to reduce risk of steam-triggered alarms. Use the hallway outside instead for coverage. The manual outlines positioning in decent detail, and it’s worth reading to get optimal performance. One minor negative I noticed: the outer casing is slightly prone to yellowing in warmer light or direct sun, which doesn’t affect performance but may aesthetically bother some over time. And though it meets EN14604 safety standards, it lacks a tamper-resistant feature that some landlords or families with small kids might want. Still, this alarm passed my practical tests—reliable smoke detection, clear chirps on low battery, easy testing, and no false positives so far. For homeowners or renters looking for simple, compliant protection on a budget, this is honestly one of the most impressive no-nonsense devices I’ve used. I now keep one spare in the drawer for gifting to friends or family members who are still running on decade-old alarms. Safety doesn’t need to be expensive or complex—this is a great reminder of that.
