Gets right down to it
A well written straight forward book that summarizes the key aspects of zen. It was a joy to read, so much I read it all in one evening.

Concise Yet Comprehensive
Everything I read about knowing ourselves completely, living in the moment, questioning the validity of our thoughts, correcting our perceptions, holding compassion for humanity, dwelling in the state of mindfulness, centering our lives only on what matters, etc., I could fully relate to.But then when I got to Step Five of practicing Zazen, (which happened to be the final page, apart from the conclusion) “Shun Dualistic Thinking”, I was lost. It reads, “Throughout the course of your life, you have learned that there are good and bad things, there is wrong and right, healthy and unhealthy, and so on. This way of thinking is misleading because it postulates that if bad did not exist in the world, there would be no good; that if it were not for all your struggles and challenges, you would not have the ability to acknowledge your accomplishments and happiness.”Not having the ability is a bit strong and too black and white for me. My victories, against the backdrop of the struggles and suffering it took to arrive there, certainly feel much sweeter. Many a parable explain the futility in perceiving things as good or bad because we really don’t know if they ultimately are. There are blessings in disguise. So I would have liked more on the topic of duality vs non-duality, but that doesn’t likely qualify for a short beginners book.I appreciated the attractive photos depicting the different seated meditation positions and definitely benefitted from this book.

Zen
This is a really great book especially if you’re trying to improve and have a life of enlightenment. It gave me a different perspective on things and most importantly an in-depth understanding of Zen and its purpose and how you need to practice it. The book is not long and I recommend it for everyone, those who are in search of themselves and understanding who they are, those who wants to continue to grow and be a stress free self improved individual, and those that are helping others. Great Book!I will be reading this book again. I did a lot of highlighting.

Breve. Conciso y claro. Clear reading. Focus.
I do enjoy clarity. And Zen for Beginners is a clear down the art and flow of Zen. The conciouss writing makes complex concepts ready to absorb and be delighted. Is only a stepping stone. And you will have to put the Zen to work and become a habit. By practice. But without the stone you will never reach the waters.
