Would this be strong enough to hold up a full size Chevy truck C10 hood?

The Lisle 45900 hood prop is strong enough to hold up any hood.

Remove the hood prop from the vehicle. Push the flat levers (2 of them) toward the smaller end of the prop while simultaneously compressing the prop rod. Sometimes the weight of the hood will make the levers jam. If this happens, I tap them with a block of wood or handle end of a screwdriver.

how to retract the hood prop after use ?

You use the small levers on the side of the hood prop to release and retract it.

Why is the better than say a wooden stick?

Sturdier, rubber ends so it won't slip, adjustable length. Other than that, it isn't any better than a wooden stick!
