Great beginners guide to homesteading. But he never addressed what to do in cases where you don't have electricity. Natural disasters happen all the time. It is one of the reasons people homestead. I hope in another book he addresses that.Excellent read. Definitely recommend.

This book is for people looking into homesteading as it provides an overview. It allows the reader to explore ideas and challenges commitment. The author uses his humor to convey the difficulty of this lifestyle while instructing how to connect with the community of those likeminded. Overall I gave the 3 star rating due to it’s lack of details on how to actually accomplish homesteading. I would give a higher star rating for readers wanting to discover how far one wants to go to live this lifestyle choice before committing.

This book was interesting, funny and relatable. I liked that the book has an overall positive tone and is thoughtful versus judgmental about different agricultural methods. The author's farm leans towards sustainable, local and organic but mentions that his "saintly grandmother" had a more conventional garden and swore by miracle grow. I liked the emphasis on business plans and goal setting. The discussion about planning for the need for calories was refreshing and is a great way to think about how your homestead feeds you and your family. The author includes lots of suggestions for further reading on many different homesteading topics. The discussion about the loss of gardening and food preservation skills is something I've been thinking about lately and the book is a great inspiration to learn some of these skills and teach them to our children. The mention of apartment and urban gardening really makes this approachable. I am a Registered Dietitian and so I have lots of education on food and food systems but this is the first homesteading book, I've read. This book did a great job discussing our food systems and suggesting ways to begin reclaiming some of our food production.

This is a very enjoyable read with lots of good information on how to get started, questions you need to ask yourself, acquiring land, and the different directions you can go regarding making your homestead self sufficient. Subjects include different methods of farming, animal husbandry, the importance of record keeping, fiber production and crafting, food production and preserving, marketing, dairy, baking, raising children on a homestead, and community involvement. This paperback is richly illustrated with glossy full color photos and printed on heavy paper. A quality book that you will enjoy reading and referring back to time and again.

It's a nice book that's easy to read. Lots of photos and some basic information in need category of homesteading. They also provide sources for more in depth information. Would make a good book for someone just starting to look at homesteading.

The layout is very organized and the photography is beautiful. You can absolutely make the most out of your homesteading journey by adding this book to your collection.

I am planning a homestead right now with my sister. We have raw land and are starting from scratch. This book goes into not just the how of things but the WHY. It's not preachy or condescending like some other books can be when trying to teach beginners. I learned so much from the first subject, right from the start! I would highly recommend this book!
