Sons Joy and a Father Redeemed
I am not a craftsman and I remember when I was a young cub scout and the Pine wood derby came up, the feelings I had as I watched others having fun but was embarrassed by my car because it was something I did myself when I saw others get assistance from their dads but I didn't get any assistance from mine. So when my son came home with his pine wood derby block it brought back all those feelings I felt as a kid. I wasn't going to let that happen or inflict that on my son, so I researched the different models and the cost. I didn't pick the most expensive one nor did I get the cheapest either, all I wanted for my son was a better shot then what I got at his age. I ordered the car and it came right away, I called down and spoke with the owner and he said "what ever you do watch the videos", we can make the block for you but you still have to build the car! We watched the videos that we were instructed to and the ones we didn't understand we re-watched. Just looking at the block of wood and how it was cut I knew it would be different this time. We followed everything to a "T" and my son painted it, and we greased the wheels with the graphite we checked everything again and again, waiting for the big day, we were ready for the race. All the other boys were there with their cars, the designs and colors, the competition looked stiff. I was holding my breath when they put my sons car up with the other three cars on the track and when they dropped the gate and let them go the cars came down the track it was a blur but my sons car left the others in the dust and came in first! My son was leaping around and I was jumping inside. Then we awaited the next round and they lined all the cars again holding our breath for what seemed an eternity and in a moment we watched them fly down the track and we came in first again, watching my son jump around was the experience I didn't have when I was that age! The third round came up and with different cars and again, watching I was thinking can we do it again, confidence was rising, they lined up and down the track they came and when it was said and done we came in first! It was justifying to wait 44 years to get a second shot and to see my son jumping around. The fourth heat came and they lined up the cars, our car was on the rail it was blazing down the track a full car length ahead of second place and we were leading when all of a sudden it came off the track but not before it crossed the finish line in first place! They stopped the race to tally all the points and when they tallied the points it was my sons car and another car tied for first place both cars being undefeated so it was a race off! Inside I was nervous as they lined the cars up in the center lanes. Ours was on the left side, they dropped the gate and both cars were neck and neck down the track I couldn't tell who was ahead and as I was looking to see who the winner was, with all the commotion it was a tie, a tie! So they brought both cars up and switched lanes, now ours was in the right hand lane, anticipation was at a fever pitch, my son was jumping around and the boys were doing a drum roll on the seats it was bedlam, it was loud inside as all eyes were on the two cars. They dropped the gate and down the track the two cars went, it was anybodies race! I couldn't tell who won everyone was standing and the people judging were on their hands and knees when it was all said and done they stood up holding my sons car up and pronouncing my son as the winner! He was jumping around and the sight was was worth the investment! The time my son and I spent on the car and the joy of winning was worth every moment. It was a great feeling of redemption for myself, some 44 years later forgetting the pain and embarrassment of my past and the memories that my son will remember for many years with joy. Best thing my son said was "Thanks dad that was awesome!" Thank you Derby Dust.

Great car, gets the job done...
Great car. 1st in pack and 2nd overall. There are some crazy Dads who build these cars for their kids. So we put a few in there place this year. The small drill bit broke easily and caused some problems. I used it correctly but it's not sturdy at all. Still, it's a great car and if you can bend your axles properly it would be really fast.

Pretty good
It's a decent car. We sanded, painted it, added the orange wheels and decals. However, it wasn't the fastest. My son had four qualifying races. Two out of the four heats he placed first, and one of those was near the track record. The The third heat his car completely flew off of the track and took out the car in the lane next to him, but it still counted and they wouldn't redo that heat. The last heat he took second, but with the crash it badly brought down his average to where he didn't even place in the top three. A literal block of wood placed in the top three, so it was kind of a disappointment for us. I have to think that if not for the crash, he would've placed top three for sure. I just can't explain how or why the car left the track and crashed, as I carefully installed the axels and wheels, so it didn't make much sense to me. I guess that's just racing for ya, but we were pretty bummed that the car crashed and didn't finish the heat, which in turn caused him not to place. I'd use this company again, but just hope it doesn't crash.

Buy this car kit!!
This is our sons third year in Cub Scouts. We became discouraged by the amount of parents that were doing more than helping and decided to give our son a better shot. We were a little skeptical, but it did not disappoint. My husband and son followed the rules to a T. This year my son took first place in his pack & brought home the gold medal. His car averaged 2.467s/run! Lightening fast. Worth every penny! Thanks, Derby Dust!

Fantastic design - won 1st place
Car was super easy (and fun) for my son to build... He didn't know if it would win, but having a functional design to start with made this a great woodworking beginner project.Pictured here was my son's "Kilowatt Express" pinewood derby car.. he won 1st place and fastest car out of the whole pack at 215moh (adjusted).

Winner, Winner!!!
Our son won his pinewood derby today and is off to the regional races! The directions for car assembly were easy to follow and our family had fun painting the car, decorating it and assembling the rest of the vehicle. It was SO nice to save time getting the car in shape and we had confidence the weights were perfect. The best thing was seeing how happy our son was after winning, especially with last place finishes before we had this car. Thank you so much for a fabulous car kit!

Last Place - Behind the Block of Wood.
This car took LAST place! Here's my contention with Derby Dust and why I wouldn't buy this car again.*) Weight Distribution: I'm not sure if this is the reason why it flew off the track 3 of the 4 races, but while it was traversing along the long metal track, it seemed to 'bump' and it was unable to recover. It did win 1 of the four races at a time of 206.8 mph. The winning average was 210.0.*) Wheel gap. I used the wheel gap tool religiously but it did look wobbly to the point that the judges wouldn't allow it to re-race when it slide off the track.*) Documentation: The document that you are given is vague, replete with typos & grammatical errors, references tools that are not in the purchase (namely the wheel insertion tool - like wtf is that?) It references you tube channels to break in ur car but the video talks about a three wheel car and what I've installed rolls on 4 wheels. Hopefully you get my point. They don't connect the dots, leaving you to wonder if you've done it correctly. In the end few thing are as bad as buying your car and then taking last. I would have been better off doing it myself so I would at least have the satisfaction that I created a last place car and not buy one.
