THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE 2011 MONO LIMITED EDITION ALBUM "PROJECTIONS".This album--along with Butterfield's "East-West", The Byrds' "Notorious Byrd Brothers", Love's "Forever Changes", The Band's "The Band", and a few other albums from that period--was (and is) one of the best, important, and most exciting albums to come out of the 1960's. Yes, they needed a good vocalist, but between Kooper, Kalb, and Katz the vocals were handled okay to adequately. I still think Tommy Flanders should've stayed in the band, but he quit abruptly and then released a decent album, "The Moonstone" on his old band's Verve label.At this point in time it's difficult (or maybe impossible) for many people who weren't around in the '60s to hear "Projections" like we did when it was first released. A lot of music has come and gone since then, and music that was new and exciting in the '60s is now heard in the context of all the music that has come afterward. I well remember hearing this album and being knocked back a bit hearing all the different styles The Blues Project blended together. This was something that had never been done before that time, and it sounded so new and exciting-where was music going? We weren't sure but we were sure going along for the ride. On one album you had folk, rock, jazz, and blues music in a mix that was completely new and exhilarating to hear. Nowadays if someone played music like this it would be met with a slight yawn.Every track on this album had something new. Kalb handled the blues tunes, Kooper the rock stuff, and Katz took over on the folkier stuff. And when you include "Flute Thing" (a great '60s title by Kooper) with Kulberg's jazzy flute work with Kooper's organ stabs in the background--well it didn't get much better during this era. Every track has something to recommend it--Kalb's stinging, tough guitar work adds punch to several songs along with Kooper's piano and organ work. And with tunes like "I Can't Keep From Crying", "Steve's Song", "Two Trains Running", "Wake Me, Shake Me", and "Cheryl's Going Home", a lot of musical territory is covered.This great sounding mono (limited) edition of "Projections" belongs in every music fan's library. If you feel that the 1960's produced a lot of good, exciting,and important music--and you don't own this album--you have a hole in your music collection. This album is The Blues Project at their pinnacle of musicianship and writing. Why the band's other albums haven't been reissued is a real mystery (a box set?), but "Anthology" covers the important tunes from across the band's short life. But I sure would like to hear each album in remastered sound. Those were the days.

I don't know if I have ever heard an album that so successfully combines rock, jazz, folk, blues and scorching guitars as this one does. This could only have been made in the '66-'67 period, when a certain magic was in the musical atmosphere. These tracks will sound familiar even to those who may never have heard them. 'Chery1's Going Home", "Flute Thing" "Wake Me, Shake Me"...how could none of these been a huge top 40 hit at the time? I can't imagine anyone who has ever enjoyed a rock album being disappointed with this one.

This album was part of the soundtrack of my teen years and was one of the most influential records of the '60s by a group that has been all but forgotten. The Blues Project was THE seminal New York City psychedelic band, members of which became influential throughout the music industry. If you love '60s music and have never heard this you owe it to yourself to buy this album. If you already know this band then I'm preaching to the choir.

One of my favorite albums. I grew up in NYC during the short time they were together.No complaints about THE MONO. My original album was in MONO.Happy I could purchase this CD and relive the groovy memories.............LOL

Decription was Condition: Used - Very Good - Media: Very Good (VG), Sleeve: Very Good (VG). The Media (Vinyl) is very good & will clean up nicely with my Cleaning System The Sleeve (Cover) is not what I consider VG. The top of the Jacket has a large tear 3/4 across, the front & back show wear, with a stain on the back lower bottom right. I would call the condition fair at best. I'm ok with it considering the age and the price was more than fair but the description should have been more accurate. Sorry

I heard Steve's Song on a friend's record player when I was 16 but did not know who sang it. 45 years later I still only remembered one line from the song and when I Googled it I solved the mystery. 2 of the guys in Blues Project went on to Blood, Sweat and Tears. It's psychedelic rock and I love it!

I loved it then and I love it even more now. There is not much to say. It sounds even better on CD. I don't want to bore everyone with acolades.All I can say is buy it.

The cd is great.

This is a great album, people were still coming to grips with guitar blues and emergent pop, as a consequence its slightly unfocused as it explores several new directions all at once. Its real guitars, vocals and drums. The sleeve write up is excruciatingly embarrassing but that's where people were at that time underlining the innocence of new forms of music as it tried to raise its head above the popular music of the time - the words and concepts to describe the new music were still being formulated hence description was caught by the forms of the past. Historic album bests suited for collectors and those able to think past the conformity of popular culture

実力派のグループのため、リタルタイムのステレオ盤、CD、紙ジャケット等、50年以上、聴いてきて、今回、このMONO盤アナログに、虜に、なっています。過去の商品が、全部、ゴミのように、感じるほど、ボーカル、演奏が、素晴らしい。ただ、MONO盤発売のサンディズドレーベルは、綺麗な美品商品と、外見で、汚れ、スレキズ、反り等、の不良商品の、二通りが、あります。激しい反りは、発売の古い商品に、多いです。予約発売の新しい商品を、買うのが、ベストです。致命傷の激しい反りは、到着後、即、チェックするのが、ベストです。第一期ジェフ ベックG、ドアーズ、ラスカルズ、ジェファーソン、ゼム、スモールフェイス等、60年代のボーカリスト重要視の作品は、MONO盤アナログが、なぜ、本領発揮するのか、素人の私には、わかりません。 ただ、MONO盤は、再生に、支障が無いスレキズは、私は、気にしないタイプですが、気になる方は、避ける方が、良いです。ただ、音にでるキズ、致命的な波形の反りのリスクは、STEREO盤より、確率は、たかいです。美品、良品は、日本盤は、100パーセント安心ですが、海外盤は、運次第です。それでも、魅力が、あります。独自の音源処理と、思います。アーティストの能力が、露骨に、出ます。やはり、ビートルズ、ストーンズ、アニマルズは、MONO盤でも、さすがに、上手です。当然、MONO盤により、失望するアーティストも、わかります。海外盤の良品は、私は、初回に、不備が、ある場合は、交換依頼あるいは、返品、返金対応後、再度注文で、手に入れます。2回目も、不備であれば、購入は、あきらめます。最後に、ご存じと思いますが、ステレオカートリッジで、魅力は、満足できます。それに、ステレオカートリッジの使用が、安心、安全です。

Für diejenigen, die diese Platte kennen (und dann wohl auch lieben), und einfach nur wissen wollen, was diese Edition klanglich und verpackungsmäßig zu bieten hat, kurz und schmerzlos erklärt: Schöner, sauberer und kräftiger Mono-Sound, der dafür Verantwortliche heißt Bob Irwin, von Sundazed ein geschmackvolles und informatives Coversleeve, die CD selber wie einst das Etikett der Verve-LP aus 1966 mit der Bestellnummer FTS-3008. Noch Fragen?Wenn Sie nicht wissen, mit welcher Platte Sie es hier zu tun haben, erkläre ich es Ihnen gerne: Einer der größten Plattenproduzenten der Sechziger, Tom Wilson, hatte für MGM/Verve ein paar Alben mit neuartiger Pop- und Rockmusik zu liefern. Und 1966 sollte sein besonderes Glücksjahr werden: In Los Angeles hatte er eine Gruppe entdeckt, die bis dahin Ungehörtes (und auch Unerhörtes) zum Besten gab, sich Mothers Of Invention nannte, geführt von einem gewissen Frank Zappa, und während man damals seine Plattenkarriere noch mit einer Single anfangen musste, gelangt es Wilson, die Plattenfirma davon zu überzeugen, dass es mit einem Doppelalbum auch ginge! Anschließend widmete sich Wilson einer ähnlich ungewöhnlichen Gruppe in New York, die sich The Velvet Underground nannte, ebenfalls ein Debütalbum, wo gegenüber der Plattenfirma Überzeugungsarbeit zu leisten war, und die Platte mit der Banane kennt heute jeder. Nicht aber die dritte LP, die Wilson für Verve in jenem Jahr machte. The Blues Project waren mit den Mothers und mit den Velvets auch nicht direkt zu vergleichen - fast spießbürgerlich wirkten sie im Vergleich zu diesen beiden Wahnsinnspartien, nicht nur von der Optik her, die fünf liebenswürdigen New Yorker jüdischer Herkunft, die im Gegensatz zu den Velvets ihre Instrumente ordentlich spielten. Also eine zwar begabte, aber doch auch wieder uninteressante, weil nur brave Band? Eben nicht."Projections" ist das einzige Studio-Album der Blues Project in ihrer klassischen Besetzung, und das einzige, das wirklich hervorragend ist und die Jahrzehnte locker überdauert hat. Keyboarder Al Kooper war schon durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Bob Dylan zu verdienter Berühmtheit gelangt, Danny Kalb hatte sich als technisch überaus versierter Bluesgitarrist schon einen guten Namen gemacht, Gitarrist Steve Katz, Bassist und Flötist Andy Kulberg und Drummer Roy Blumenfeld waren ebenfalls überdurchschnittlich gute Musiker, und als Gruppe spielten sie fantastisch zusammen. Und sie waren mehr als eine Bluesband - sie machten den einen oder anderen Abstecher in Richtung Folk-Rock, frühen Country-Rock, ja sogar Jazz-Rock. Ihr im Frühjahr 1966 erschienenes Debütalbum war eine Live-Platte, ihre dritte LP auch ("Live At The Cafe Au-Go-Go" bzw. "Live At Town Hall"), dann zerbrach diese Besetzung, die in anderen Formationen aufgenommenen Alben hatten dieses Niveau nicht mehr annähernd.Was "Projections" so außergewöhnlich macht, sind seine Stücke und deren Zusammenstellung. "I Can't Keep From Crying" eröffnet die Platte, eine heiß kochendes Blues-Rock-Feuerwerk mit süffiger Orgel, scharfen Licks von Kalb, von Al Koopers Gesang akzentuiert. Diese Nummer zeigt gleich, wie einfallsreich und zugleich einfühlsam diese Band alte Bluesnummern (diese hier stammte von Blind Willie Johnson) bearbeiten konnte. Nur vier der neun Stücke dieses 50 Minuten langen Albums sind Eigenkompositionen, davon drei von Kooper und eine von Katz: "Steve's Song" ist einer der absoluten Höhepunkte nicht nur dieses Albums, sondern des ganzen Repertoires der Band, und ein zeitlos brillantes Liebeslied: Nach einer bezaubernden instrumentalen Einleitung singt Katz in seiner dunklen Stimme von seiner Beziehung, kontrastiert durch eine sonore Orgel und getragen von einem Bassriff, das alles zusammen hält. Dann gibt fetzigen Rhythm and Blues, Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" steht am Programm, den Rest der damaligen A-Seite der LP füllte ein Track mit Spieldauer 11:20: "Two Trains Running" von McKinley Morganfield, besser bekannt unter dem Namen Muddy Waters. Wie Koopers Orgel und Kalbs Gitarre und Gesang ein simples Riff über 11 Minuten lang variieren, und von zarten und leisen Stellen bis zu wuchtigen und lauten alles aufbieten, ohne dass es in überlanges Jam ausartet, ist immer wieder hinreißend anzuhören.Mit "Wake Me, Shake Me" wurde im seligen Vinyl-Zeitalter die zweite Seite eröffnet, eine Al Kooper-Rocknummer mit Soul-Touch, was auch der treibende Bass unterstreicht. "Cheryl's Going Home" ist mit zweieinhalb Minuten der kürzeste Track und ist eine flotte Version eines Folksongs von Bob Lind, wieder dominiert Katz' Stimme und Koopers Orgel ähnlich wie bei "Steve's Song", das Stück hat im Ganzen fast schon Country Rock-Flair. Und dann kommt früher Jazz-Rock, ruhig und sanft dahin swingend, eine Instrumentalnummer, deren Thema eine Flöte anspielt und variiert, deshalb heißt die Al Kooper-Komposition auch so: "Flute Thing", Andy Kulbergs dicke musikalische Visitenkarte auf diesem Album. Danny Kalb wiederum glänzt mit der Version von Jimmy Reeds "Caress Me Baby" als Sänger und vor allem als Gitarrist - was er in diesen 7 Minuten heraus lässt, deutet schon an, was bald einmal von Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher und vielen anderen kommen wird. "Fly Away" beschließt die Platte, ein schöner und schwungvoller Folk-Rock-Song von Al Kooper, geprägt von seiner Stimme und Akustikgitarrensound mit Mundharmonika.Warum diese fantastische Platte die Musikwelt nicht auf den Kopf gestellt hat, mag seine Gründe haben, vor allem jenen, dass die Blues Project Frühstarter waren, und dieses Album für einen ganz großen Erfolg musikalisch wohl zu komplex war. Jedenfalls war es viel mehr als Blues-Rock. Und wenn dieses New Yorker Quintett auch keine solche "Freak Show" wie die beiden oben erwähnten Labelmates waren - eine innovative und wegbereitende Gruppe in der Pop- und Rockgeschichte der zweiten Hälfte der Sechziger waren sie mit Sicherheit genauso. Für mich ist "Projections" 48 Jahre nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung der gleiche Hörgenuss wie zu früheren Jahrzehnten - ein Klassiker und Meilenstein eben ...
