Do you need to go a size up

I ordered my usual size which is 9 and with thickish work socks they fit really well.

What makes these waterproof, is it just the leather outer?

Not sure. It works really well though you feet do not suffer getting wet from the elements. They opted for a fitting with no eyelets to let the liquid in.
