For the Right to Learn: Malala Yousafzai's Story (Encounter)

A condensed but very impactful book for middle grade readers. The author successfully explains life and struggles in Pakistan under the oppressive rule of the Taliban. The assassination attempt on Malala’s life is described with enough detail so the reader understands how shocking it was and the injuries sustained, but avoids creating a frightening or too vivid scene for a young reader.I appreciated the word definitions included at the end of the book because many of the words used in the story will be new to children. I’m impressed with the concise but thorough description of the tensions that exist in the Middle East, and inclusion of the impact of 9/11 bringing US troops to the region.Malala Yousafzai is a strong and courageous child (young woman now) who is an excellent example of fighting for equality and freedom, particularly for girls and women. This story is great at providing an introduction to another part of the world and can promote vigorous conversations between children and their peers, teachers, and families. Strong recommendation for a lovely book of girl power succeeding despite great odds against a relatable protagonist!

I loved the soulful art accompanying the fast paced text. I felt anger that there are people who would want to rob girls of their right to education. I felt sadness for all the lives lost. I felt overwhelming hope that Malala was brave in the face of such obstacles. I want my girls to read this.

What a great little biography about an amazing girl, now woman. I wish all girls valued their education the way they do in the countries where it's threatened. Malala will be an inspiration for generations of girls.

I like this book because it is educational and fun. It makes you want to read more. I love it.

My 8 year old daughter LOVED this book. Took it to her class to share, and many of her classmates read it too. It faces very hard topics in a sensitive-as-possible way... without avoiding them. My daughter now has started raising money for the Malala Fund, watching all of Malala's speeches, asking questions about the middle east, different religions, discrimination, etc. It's been an amazing launch pad. She's now read the young reader version of Malala's autobiography too, but she wouldn't have had the interest if it weren't for this book. Even though it's geared towards kids, I still recommend reading it before or with your kids so you can discuss. It's an optimistic book, but not a light topic.

I love to teach my English language learners all about Malala Yousafzai's brave fight for the right to education for all. This book does a good job explaining her story, with illustrations accompanying the text. Suitable for read-alouds by the teacher, as well as independent study for both fluent readers and ELL students from grade 3-9, as the language is accessible and interest level is high.

This book and this girl is a inspiration to all us.she fought for what she knew was right. No matter the cost.

Fantastic book for young readers! I read this with my Grade 3 class and we really enjoyed learning about Malala's struggle for basic rights which we take for granted in Canada. A great learning experience and a wonderful mini unit.

Malala is such an inspiring person and this book really captures her story in a way that is accessible to young readers. The illustrations are beautiful as well.I loaned it to a teacher friend who read it (with some editing along the way as this is quite heavy/scary for Year 3's) to her class who were engrossed. I'm excited to share this inspiring story of such a brave girl with my own class. It's lovely that at the end it shows a photo of the real Malala and tells you more about her.

Well-written and beautifully illustrated. This is a perfectly pitched introduction to Malala's life for children aged 9 and below. It does not shy away from the scariest parts of Miss. Yousafzai's story and it explains some fairly sophisticated ideas in a way that children can understand. My students really enjoyed learning about Malala through this book and were very eager to read more about her.
