Bee Hive Winter Quilt Box Assembled Langstroth Style Made in USA (10 Frame)

Good quality. Overall very happy.

I was looking for a replacement vendor for this product and came across these folks and liked the pictures and reviews. I ordered 10 of the quilt boxes and 10 candy boards. The wood is top quality. The build quality is top notch too. Glued and screwed on all joints. Torqx zinc plated screws on all of the box joint fingers. No splitting from over driven screws. Solid construction. They packed my order in 3 big "custom" thick cardboard boxes that mostly survived UPS. My only recommendation would be to attach corner protectors on the outer corners, inside the box. A few corners were dented a bit, but they are not bad. Next year, they will get my future orders.

Built well

First off, the good… Very well built - mortises with screw and glue added. Good handles cut in. You have to paint but that’s as advertised. They seem to have fixed the screen over breather hole issues mentioned in earlier reviews. They were packed decent and shipped to be timely. There is one small exit hole in front, so you don’t have to have extra shims with holes if you don’t want. Now the ‘opportunities”… The one top exit hole is very small and I had to enlarge it a little. That wasn’t a problem and some may prefer to leave as is. The bees will enlarge it if they want that and your winter isn’t brutal. The big issue is the bottom - you’re really supposed to use fabric, and the pics sort of imply these have that. The bottom is actually fine metal screen (hardware cloth). This is a problem for two reasons… One, bees’ feet can be damaged if trapped in screen vertices. Two, if you use wood chips with a lot of fines, these can rain dust down on the bees. I will fix these, but these are premium price, and with the exception of painting, need to be dead spot perfect out of the box. I took a half star for the top hole size and a star and a half for the screen issue. If you are handy these are still decent. If you aren’t handy, I’d talk to your local apiary to see if they have a better source.

quality well built

Excited to try this method of over-wintering my bees. You can tell that this was handmade and made well. Since it came in unfinished pine, I had to paint it with some low VOC latex paint to get it ready for the outside weather, but not a hard project! Love supporting the family apiaries.

I ordered two of these quilt boxes and two candy boards. These are extremely well made and are built for the long haul. I know I will be needing some more hive equipment in the spring and will look first to these folks come spring.

Ready to go, right out of the box. Could I have made my own? Yes, but not as good as this one. I really appreciate the quality, and the immediate relief of knowing my bees will be kept dry.
