How does the back of the mask look like? Does it cover the head?

It does not cover the head, just a strap. My son is 9 and we ended up returning this costume because the mask did not fit well and kept falling off.

Can you remove the hat and wear it alone without the mask?

U could but the hat is very flimsy...it doesn't really work over the mask either

What age child would fit in the large? The large is much cheaper- would it be easy to make temporary adjustments to fit a smaller child?

The large fit my eight year old who wears size 10-12.

Should I size up? My 9 year old son is just at the 54" mark, a medium is suggested, do these run true to size ?
