Q: Are there better that the 400bt true wireless ?

With Sennheiser sound is the #1 consideration and both the CX True Wireless and CX 400BT True Wireless provide amazing sound quality so either is an excellent choice for sound. The CX True Wireless does offer a few additional features: 1) Bass Boost ... so you can get your music really pumped up. 2) Role Switching ... so you can use one ear bud at a time or both together. 3) Adjustable Sidetone ... so you can hear your own voice during calls. 4) Smaller ergonomic design ... so you can get a more snug fit in the ear for great passive noise cancelling. 5) 27 hour battery life ... so you can have your music all day. Q: On the underside of the earbud there is a small piece of material over the charging contacts. What is this for and should I remove it?

On the underside of the earbuds there is a protective covering over the charging contact points to prevent the earbuds from powering on before they are ready to be used. You need to remove this protective covering prior to charging otherwise the earbuds won't be able to power on. Have a great day.

Q: Can you use just the left earbud by itself?

YES!!! The earbuds feature "role switching" which lets you use each earbud separately or together as a pair. The added benefits to using only one earbud at a time is that you can hear what's going on around you (ie: if you are walking do the street) and one ear bud can be charging so your music is always ready to go.
