Good information, but short
I am a parent of a child who fits disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) to a T. I am hopeful that the new diagnosis will help guide research that will help treatment of children like my daughter. This book is a well written overview of what is known about DMDD and other mood disorders in children. There are a few interesting points that I was not able to find via basic web searches. What I found most promising was the assertion that these kids don't have to be restricted to the same meds that bipolar kids get, and that antidepressants and stimulants <may> be worth trying. However, this is more of a booklet than a book. It's about 80 pages with big fonts and a very large top margin. If it had fonts and margins more like a typical paperback book it would be about 50 pages. Expect to read it in about an hour.

A begining
Now, let's find a way to get the home, school and community collaboratively working together in a evidenced based approach. Our families living this challenge have no resources available that will support these very serious disabling symptoms. There is no place for us to turn and get the schools and our community agencies to be willing to put forth genuine effort to meet these children's needs. We are looked at as having poor parenting skills. Our children are looked at as being disruptive and not deserving to be in general education classes. But instead of solid collaborative therapeutic approaches set in motion..our kids get put in the ED classes and have their "therapeutic interventional treatment services", given in behaviour tracking charts and weekly pull outs for group...But how many move back to gen ed?How many graduate high school? How many are getting that educational foundation to be individually successful and a healthy productive citizen?

If the reader would like to read a summary of those reasons you may ...
Mr. Finnerty explains clearly why the editors of the DSM-5 decided to not include Childhood Bipolar Disorder in the DSM-5. As a professor of counseling in a county that has, what I believe to be a high incidence of children with bipolar disorder, I believe the decision the DSM-5 authors made, and which Mr. Finnerty affirms was incorrect. There are more than a dozen reasons why I disagree with them and with him. If the reader would like to read a summary of those reasons you may send me an email at [email protected]

Don't buy this; it should never have been published as a book.
This should never have been published as a book for sale. It is more like a conversation or relatively informal lecture that was transcribed and then sold as a book. I really wonder about the publisher's standards, and those of the author of this "book." It is so short and informally written, and devoid of much useful information that no one should pay money for this thing. Read the DSM V section on Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder instead of this book.

Nice Book
Easy language and very clear explanation. I really enjoyed reading it. I recommend for professionals and patients of mental health.

Nothing new
that cannot be found in the DSM 5. The information seems correct but is not worth the price under the circumstances. As I psychologist, I found this to be a long, direct dig against the Papalos' book. For example, he tells you to throw their book away four times in the 1st 30 pages. I believe we should read various sources and draw our own conclusions considering he provides no data.

I do not recommend this book for anyone
I do not recommend this book for anyone. Finnerty spends most of the book criticizing another in a repetitive and destructive manner. That only leads me to trust less about what he does have to say, which you don't get to until page 50 , of a essentially 75 page 'book'. I was very disappointed with this purchase.
