Maybe I expect too much
I really like my Norpro kitchen scraps holder (it's not really a composter). It is well built and attractive on my kitchen counter. The filters that originally came with it became ineffective. We washed them, hoping they would work better, but that didn't help. So I threw them out and ordered several sets of these replacement filters. While waiting for them to be delivered, I continued to use the lidded bucket without the filters. It actually worked quite well. Then the filters arrived and I installed them. I quickly found that if I have something really smelly in the unit, such as onions and broccoli, after a day or two it doesn't much matter whether the filters are there or not. And the filters actually retain some of that smell after I empty and clean the unit. I will continue to use these filters until they are worn, but I might not buy new ones. I think this unit is effective because it has aeration. Before I was just using a big plastic tub with a lid and things quickly went anaerobic, which really stinks. With the holes in the lid on this unit, that doesn't happen.

Stainless Steel Composters: Why both a circular and square filter?
I have a stainless steel composter and have been using both these and the circular filters successfully, for years, or so I thought... I was wondering why this set contains both a square and circular filter, and found this info on the Norpro website, which explains the "correct" way of using the filters (square one stuffed up to the top of the dome, circular one in the lip of the lid, not touching each other. What an "a ha moment!" (It seems like the circular ones might be marketed for the ceramic countertop composters that don't have as much pontential space in the dome of the lid.)From Norpro:To Replace Filters: just pull old filters out and toss. Inside replacement packet are two filters: one square filter and one round filter. Insert the square filter first. Just push it into the lid next to the holes in the lid, using your hands. Insert the round filter second. It goes in the other part of the lid and does not touch the other filter. Just work it in with your hands. The lid does not come apart.

Norpro 94F 2-piece composter filter refill
The filters keep my composter from smelling up the kitchen. We compost all fruit and vegetable scraps as well as coffee grounds and egg shells - basically anything organic. I have been using this product for at least four years and have been very satisfied. The stainless steel composter looks nice in my kitchen but I need to change the filters when the bad odors come back. The filters really are a necessity.

Filers are too small
These filters are inexpensive but do not properly fit the Norpro compost keep I previously bought. The original filters are thick and round, fitting snugly into the lid, these are thin with a smaller diameter. They do an OK job of keeping the smell in the compost can but gnats and fruit flies have free reign and love breeding between the 2 filters.

compost filter
The photo w/this ad should have tipped me off, but I thought I might be receiving the metal part shown. I rec'd 2 filters - one round filter that is a little small for my counter top composter that has no holder as shown; and one square filter that doesn't fit my composter...
