Easily the BEST portable record player with a Chuo Denche cartridge - GREAT VALUE
Hey! You know what? This Numark PT01 is hands down the BEST portable record player with a ceramic cartridge. DO NOT BUY a Crosley Cruiser. DO NOT BUY a Victrola. DO NOT BUY any one of the many cookie cutter knock offs from China.Several features set this one apart from the rest.1.) a REAL Chuo Denche cartridge.2.) pitch control3.) tone adjustment4.) (and this is the big one) - it accepts batteries for TRULY PORTABLE on the go record enjoyment.5.) price - you get a LOT for your $120 bucks, friend-O.I purchased this several months ago, and it's great. I use mine primarily on the front porch at the end of the day so I can listen to my Ernest Tubb and Hank Snow LPs while savoring a fine cigar and some iced tea. The sound quality as is, is quite decent. Some may notice that this only has a single monaural speaker, but honestly, the sound (donald j) Trumps the Crosley and Victrola and knock-off 'stereo' units which, while stereo, have smaller, lower quality speakers that are place too closely together for one to get true stereo enjoyment.And... the Numark has RCA speaker out connections and a pair of phono jacks. I have not connected this to a better set of speakers, but I have listened to LPs on it with a good pair of over the ear cans, and the audio quality is surprisingly VERY good.I added a flip-over Chuo Denche style cartridge that allows me to use the proper size stylus for 78s with a flip of the cartridge lever. (Did I mention this plays 78s too? IT DOES!)There are after market mods available for the PT01 including a marginally better speaker replacement and a replacement tone-arm with a magnetic cartridge and pre-amp. I have considered these mods, but I honestly don't think I will sink more money into an already fine fine fine phonograph.I fell in love with this record player so much that I also bought one as an Xmas gift for my 5 year old godson as well as my 13 year old granddaughter. They BOTH love it and are getting much enjoyment out of theirs too.The Numark PT-01 is MY choice for a portable record player, it should be yours too.

Neat record player
I got this record player so that I can convert vinyl records to .wav files on my PC to sample songs for my music. This does exactly that! I don't use the software it came with though. I use Audacity and select the record player as the input device and then record it to either mono or stereo. The sound quality from the built in speaker isn't too shabby either. It being portable with it's own case is great too. This is a good record player for the price.

Great little crate digging turntable
This turntable, like so many things, represents a series of trade-offs. I recommend reading through the reviews and making up your own mind.If you are expecting an audiophile turntable, this is at best a two-star turntable. There's nothing fantastic about the sound it produces. Frankly, in this price range, if you're searching for a higher quality turntable, the very first thing I would recommend doing is immediately adding about two hundred dollars to your budget. Either that or haunt thrift stores hoping for lightning to strike. Most turntables in this range are similarly equipped. I wouldn't hook it up to an audio system, either, though you can. But I am a snob, having an older Dual turntable downstairs (largely for 78s) and high level turntables from Technics and Luxman upstairs, all equipped with better sylus/needles.All of which may make you wonder why I even bought this thing, let alone am writing a review that doesn't completely slag it. (Unless you think four stars is slagging it, in which case I humbly suggest you have a problem with grade inflation). Because this turntable really shines and excels as a crate-digger's turntable, which is what I'm using it for. Using a small flotilla of "D" cell batteries, this becomes a highly portable turntable you can drag along with you when you're out searching for records at your favorite thrift store (perhaps in combination with the hunt for a better turntable). It has some really nice features, aside from the battery power. For one, you can adjust the pitch, changing the speed of the record slightly. This is important with 78s in particular, as they weren't always mastered precisely at 78. For another, it has a full compliment of speeds 33/45/78; I know it's missing 16, audio geeks, but if you find a pile of 16rpm records I'm not sure what to tell you exactly. You should have bought a lottery ticket instead? Please note if you plan to play 78s on this turntable, you should buy a 78 specific needle, which has a wider tip than a 33/45 needle. Such needles are easily found for this turntable and cost under ten bucks. The needle is relatively easy to change, although I have found the replacements can be harder to get off.The case is fairly well made, though not perfect, and I'd guess eventually I might drop and crack it. The needle tracks somewhere around 4 to 5 grams, pretty well on the heavy side, so if you find something you really really like I don't recommend playing it repeatedly. I'd like it if there were a compartment for the power cord and another one for a spare needle, but there is not and it is not a dealbreaker for me. I got around the later by gorilla taping a Pfanstiel needle box to the inside of the cover; it works fine for the intended purpose but I'm always a sucker for well thought out industrial design, especially if that thinking reflects my intended use.I haven't bothered to use this turntable's MP3 recording capability. It came with a mess of software CDs for that purpose, but I don't have the faintest idea what happened to said CDs. City dump, maybe? Other reviews should cover this capability better. Some of the other reviews mention some problems with the belt. You might consider buying an extended warranty. I didn't-- in addition to being an audio snob, I am a daredevil as well.I'd assess your needs. If you want something for occasional play of vinyl and shellac recordings, this'll probably do you fine. If you want a high degree of portability, it's a fine little turntable. If you're like me and dig through the occasional old pile of records and want a feel for what something sounds like on-site, this is probably close to indispensable. It's also reasonably priced. If you're looking for a high or mid range turntable, add dollars to your budget and move on. If you're going to play your records a lot, get a better turntable.
