Rivetingly passionate story of the most unlikely of relationships.
Deeply moving account of a startlingly unlikely relationship. A gay man and a middle aged woman. Callow is his customarily articulate and humane self in this really moving story of the relationship between two highly intelligent and engaging lovers.

SIMON CALLOW AT HIS BEST
Wonderful true story of love that burned brightly but was never on a physical level. A very interesting and enjoyable read as always from Simon Callow.

A wonderful, warm, complicated account of a human relationship.
I was reading Alan Rickman's diaries (Truly, Madly) and he mentioned this book. As an admirer of Simon Callow's, I immediately acquired it and I duly read it. It's remarkable and engaging, and I enjoyed it very much -- mot merely the elegant prose Callow produces, but the human insights he provides and self-awareness he has. It is, it's worth saying, a very fast read. Incidentally, if you know Stephen Frears' 1987 film "Prick up your Ears" -- about Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell -- Callow's friend Peggy Ramsay is represented in it by Vanessa Redgrave, though Callow is not persuaded by the representation. Nevertheless, the portrait in the film was sufficiently vivid that I can remember it in detail many years after seeing the film.
