about 10" to hang things on. it's nice because when not in use i flip it against the wall so no one will hit their head on it. i am very happy with it, it's nice to hang things up as they come out of dryer.

Can you tighten it, so it doesn't pivot easily?

There is a machine screw with a screwdriver head on top and an acorn nut on bottom as the pivot point; simply tighten this down to control the level of movement.

Is this made in the USA?

Believe it is made in China but the quality is pretty good.
