one of the best books on the subject
Concise and gave details on a variety of fruits and their types. Really good for armatures and seasoned orchard enthusiasts. One of the few that included care of fig trees. Most of the information is for the UK but it can easily be adapted to tropical climates since the book mentions each species weather preferences. overall it's a good book to have as a quick reference and great photographs too.

Absolute bible for gardeners
We have quite a few acres of orchard with over 200 different apple trees and getting onto 300 different fruit trees. With that many or one tree there will be always a problem that happens. So far this book has answered them all. We live in the Southern Hemisphere but all the information still appropriate.

Exactly what you've been looking for
This book was precisely what I was looking for. Having read other books on the subject, I found this book contained just the right amount of information organised in exactly the right manner to get a novice up and informed about fruit growing. The style is precise and informative, avoiding any unnecessary waffle.I don't suppose advanced orchardists will get so much from this book. I'm not one, so I wouldn't know, but I'll bet much of this knowledge is already known. However, there is a good deal of reference material provided in the Appendix. In short, a great book for a starter like me with very clear and structured information. I expect to refer to this book for the next 20yrs. I'm not sure I will ever be so advanced to outgrow this book, but I live in hope.

Good write ups and excellent pictures
Book is very informative on different varieties of fruit trees. Pictures helped in distinguishing different varieties as well as bugs. Only issue I had was that the book is written for britan and some varieties in North America are not listed.

A lot of info, but not too much
It's a pretty good book for home fruit tree growing. It's definitely written from a British perspective, so if you live in a tropical climate, this is not the book for you. Great photos, high quality book, good advice for particular varieties without becoming too heavily scientific.

Excellent comprehensive guide
I'm absolutely delighted with the fruit tree handbook! I am restoring a 12 acre plum orchard on Scotland and grafting new plum, apple and pear trees for it, so I have been speculatively buying books on the subject for some time and have been reasonably disappointed with their content - they tend toward either watered-down beginner guides or stodgy great lumps of text. This book was a revelation! I Not only is it produced to a really high quality with full-colour photos and diagrams but the material is comprehensive and well written. Sections on orchard layout, pruning, pest control and recommended varieties are geared to suit everyone from gardeners who want to plant a couple of trees to someone like me who has a bigger acreage in mind and there is a section specifically for community orchards. I particularly like the sequential training diagrams for growing espaliers, cordons, step-overs and the like. Ben Pike should be very proud of his efforts in his first book. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in growing top fruit on any scale. Really excellent!

Comprehensive guide to fruit tree cultivation
I bought this as a present for my son who's having a small orchard planted, but I doubt it will leave my house and I'll have to tell him when, what and how to do things. It is a well presented book from planning through to pruning. It does cover different fruits and seems a really comprehensive book.
