PETZL BELAY Safety device.

Like all things Petzl, this is a great product. It’s extremely light weight but still very strong. There are no moving parts other than the rope itself. These do require a bit of skill as you have to be sure to keep the brake strand in the correct position and keep a hand on it at all times. It also must be loaded properly so that the additional friction “teeth” can provide the needed grip on the rope. It does feed rope well and catch with proper technique. The reverso can be used as a top rope device as well. It performs well as a rappel device but I would recommend a hollow block or other type of “third hand” to ensure safety. It is simple, versatile and easy to use, light weight and cost effective. The only down side is you have to be sure to pay attention to what you are doing, it is not as forgiving as a semiautomatic device. For back country use, it takes up no space and offers a lot of solutions if you are looking at ultralight. If not it’s a good backup that won’t fail like a mechanical so it’s not bad to have on your rack.
