The Thinker's Guide to Eating Your Way to Health
Holford and Burne provide an outstanding approach to using food as medicine. And why not? After all, what you ingest affects everything you do. The book is a real eye opener about the use of everyday foods as medication. Personally, pointing out the dangers of the various types of medication for depression, heart conditions, anxiety, Alzheimers, diabetes and other modern diseases is preaching to the converted. Anyone choosing to read this book will already be interested in a drug-free approach to better health. The strength of the book lies in its ability to explain complex information in easy-to-understand English and to make the reader think, "I can do that". It is difficult not to be enthused about discovering curative and preventative drug-free medication possibilities; the solution is as near as the nearest supermarket shelf. On the other hand, with the explicit and detailed information on vitamin supplementation that the book provides, there is the very real possibility that an enthusiastic reader might actually go over the top in self-'medication' on the principle that if 200mcg of supplement is good for you, then 600mcg will be three times as good.... So, a fascinating read. Does it work? I am trialling some of the suggestions for a couple of conditions I have and they seem to be working very well indeed. But even if you only found out how to control insulin spikes at meal times so that your body would not convert a lot of your food intake into stored fat, then the book will already have paid for itself several thousand times over (if, indeed, one can put a dollar price on life and good health).

slow.....
It is a good book but a little slow. Has a lot of good information in it. The only reason I gave it four stars is the information.

Beware!
Potential readers of this book should know that David Colquhoun in THE GUARDIAN has cautioned that Patrick Holford (one of the authors of this book and founder of the Institute of Nutrition) says that vitamin C is better than conventional drugs in treating Aids. He has other scary beliefs as well. It would be nice if cancer, diabetes, heart disease, alzheimers, arthritis and autism could be cured through diet as Mr. Holford claims. Good nutrition can do wonders, but these particular claims don't stand up to scientific scrutiny. In addition, Mr. Holford has absolutely no credentials for making such statements. (His only degree is from the institution he founded.) Yes, consumers should be wary of conventional medicine, but alternative therapies need to be evidence-based.

My mom loved this book. I purchased this book as a mothers day gift, my mom always borrows this from the library and so I decided to buy this for her, she said she would highly recommend it to anyone who doesnt like to take pills for some illnesses, i read some parts of the book and I do agree thus will recommend it as well.. It does works, very simple instructions and it did help my mom to help her control her highblood pressure by just following what food to take and what to avoid, she is no longer taking pills at all.

Brilliant book, I didn't know anything about homocysteine levels and think it is a good book for people who feed like they have no choice but to take pills with horrible side effects. This book gives you options for what might help so you have possiblity of healing yourself naturally. If all doctors were trained to look at allergies/vitamin deficiencies/diet first before prescribing pills there would be a lot less need for medication. I realised 7 years ago that I'd had bad catarrh all my life because of dairy. It had also affected my speech. Switched to non dairy milk and never had the problem since (I make my own just add oats or almonds/cashews/brazils to a blender with 3 or 4 times as much water ta da "milk" My mother has had severe catarrh for years she couldn't give cows milk up managed to the past 6 weeks catarrh gone altogether she hasn't managed to fix her acid reflux problem yet though she is trying (the doctors response was (when she said she'd given up milk because it didn't agree with her ) was to drink milk!

This book is clear and easy to follow. However I would read the contents list first to make sure your problem is listed because it does not cover a huge range of conditions. However the info on the conditions it does cover is excellent and comprehensive. I feel it is honest too. some people say he tries to sell too many supplements ,but he is honest when he says the results for Chondrotin, for example ,have not been great. Even if you do decide to see your doctor at least you will be well informed about your options first.

I would recommend this book as it gives alternative ideas to cope with problem symptoms and im now using food to help my arthritis although it is hard to take in all the information at once. A helpful and good read, keep it handy to help others too.
