This book looks like it is going to be great.
I recently downloaded Inkscape and since I am a beginner with vector software, I needed a book. I was unsure about buying this one for 2 reasons, 1- it is a 2009 issue and it is now 2020, and 2-someone's review said it was page 40 before you started anything. I received the book today and have read from the very beginning into mid chapter 2. I am very happy with what I have read so far. Chapter one explains vectors, but also explains rasters and how they differ. What's more, the author also explains competitive programs and what they do. He suggest you use the right tool (program) to use for what you want as a result. He explains what each type of software program is best for, such as a Photoshop (raster) and its competitors, programs for publishing, what CAD software does. I appreciate the background and am delighted to understand the various software uses. It is very helpful. He tells you what Inkscape can and can't do (as of the writing of the book, 2009). But he also gives you a web address on page XX where he will try to keep up with changes to Inkscape. At this writing, I am only up to page 23, in chapter 2. Chapter 2 gets you used to the Inkscape screen and an overview of the tools. You do begin to use the program in chapter 2 and he encourages to use the program as you read the book. The book contains 448 pages. I expect to learn a lot. I needed to start from the beginning and this book is doing that for me. However, if you are familiar with vector programs, you can skip the beginning and go to the chapters that will benefit you. If you are a beginner or even perhaps have a little knowledge of vectors, I think you will benefit greatly from reading the book from the beginning. I have had some lessons in Adobe Illustrator, but did not use it enough to become proficient and I basically forgot it all. I never found The Classroom in a Book series to be very good. I am proficient in Photoshop and can use Adobe Lightroom but I am still learning more about that program as I use it.Adobe Creative Cloud just got too expensive when it went from buying the Suite of disks to Creative Cloud monthly fees. I am just an amateur, I use these programs for enjoyment, not business. I do subscribe to Photoshop now that the monthly fee has gone down. Since I am good with Photoshop, I did not want to try another program, plus it is a great program. I wanted to learn how to Illustrate. I think this book will do it for me! I'm glad I took the chance and purchased it.

Great "go-to" book on Inkscape
This book has proven itself invaluable as a reference for doing just about everything there is to do in Inkscape. Looking things up is easy as 1-2-3 and there is more than sufficient information for formulating solutions and ideas. Thanks for an excellent tool! Highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn the ins and outs of Inkscape.

I HAD to have this book
I borrowed this book from the library and liked it so much I HAD to have my own copy. This book is an overview of the Inkscape software. Lots of good information well written well presented. If you follow this book step by step you will learn to use Inkscape to varying degrees. Not as good as an instructor standing over your shoulder but still pretty darn good.

Well written, well edited, very understandable, very thorough
I'm about a third through it and I'm confident that I'll learn everything about Inkscape that I want to know.

This book is the best companion for program
Being a complete novice using Inkscape, I am using this book page by page. It walks you through every aspect of the program. Finding and using this book and program is so very exciting, so much to learn, so much unleased creativity awaits me. I am having a great time. I am 57 years young, and proving you can teach an old girl new tricks. I plan to use this program and book to develope items for mixed media art.

Extremely helpful
I'm a new user to Inkscape 0.48. The book is well written, easy to follow, and contains many clarifying diagrams. With it, I've been able to quickly find answers to questions that eluded me via Google and Inkscape forum searches. In the past, I worked exclusively with raster graphic editors. This book has made it easy to ramp up on vector fundamentals, like working with Bezier curves. The author, an Inkscape programmer, provides background information to explain why certain features work the way they do. Being a programmer myself, I know how rare it is to get that kind of transparency. I appreciate those insights, because they highlight both the limitations and the possibilities offered by this very powerful graphics tool.Though this book was published in 2009, everything I've tried works in the current 0.48 version of Inkscape. Newer features, like creating fonts, are not discussed in this book. I do look forward to buying an updated version of this book in the future.

Once I can get a foothold there seems to be a whole load of good stuff. Wish I could be more positive
I'm always at a loss to understand why Inkscape is so hard to explain. Is itthe code or the book. Once I can get a foothold there seems to be a whole loadof good stuff. Wish I could be more positive.

A Very Thorough and Easy to Read Primer
This book helped me learn enough Inkscape to complete some design urgent tasks in a couple of days. It's well written, gives clear instructions how to accomplish an operation, and appears to be a through coverage of the Inkscape app. I still have not finished all the book because the task I had to do was not too difficult. However, I plan to finish the book soon because Inkscape is a very well designed app with great features which I will be able to use in future projects.

Use Inkscape?... then you need this book!
No Starch Press produce some of the best reference books for Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) applications available, and 'The Book of Inkscape' is no exception. The book guides you through the essential elements of Inkscape in a hands-on way which gives you plenty of those "I didn't know you could do that!" moments... in fact you often find that you've abandoned the book for an hour or two while you play around with what you've just learned!Besides providing a great introduction to the software - and offering some tutorials to get you started - this is a great reference book to have to hand while you're working... and I *mean* working. I offer an affordable design service to local charities and start-up businesses and although I have access to both Illustrator and CorelDraw I've found myself using Inkscape 90% of the time. What's more with HTML5's SVG capabilities web designer's will find Inkscape's XML Editor (which I was introduced to via this book) really useful. All in all, probably the best book currently available for this increasingly important piece of software.

Great guide to Inkscape
I read this cover to cover except for some sections not relevant to map drawing. Surprisingly readable and interesting for such a manual.

The Book of Inkscape - The Definitive Guide to the Free Graphics Editor
This book is for the dedicated Graphic Designer and describes the capabilities of this programme in the hands of a dedicatedgraphic person. There are a number of ways to illustrate and isometric projection being one I am often drawn too.The book is laid out very well with its illustrations. There are many examples of what can be achieved - even down to designing a basic card to introduce one's self or designing a web site. Anyone who likes working in the design sector will like the book.

A great highly detailed reference
Inkscape is a very powerful drawing package, however it does not have the most intuitive interface. This book is a great manual and reference for everything you would like to do in Inkscape an much more.I bought the kindle version and my one complaint is that you cannot view kindle books on Linux - the operating system that Inkscape was originally built for - unless you are online. Can anyone say irony? You can read it on android which is ... Linux derived! Sort it out Amazon.

Recommended beginners as it was great for me when I ...
All I need to learn from Inkscape I got from this book. Was for an ace resource to learn from. I covered about 3/4 of the book before I got all I really needed to for what I was aiming for. Recommended beginners as it was great for me when I began.
