Q: Is the padded sleeve inside padded on both sides? So laptop is properly protected?

It has an added padded panel ( not leather) on the inside and the outside has a pocket for paperwork so gives protection on that side. The bottom is unpadded. So I'd say if loaded for an office on a normal commute it'd be fine, but maybe not for falling off a bike!

Q: Is the briefcase very soft or does it stand on its own without being propped against something?

I love this bag the leather is quite stiff but as I’ve just recently returned to work and using it not sure if it will soften in time but yes it stands up on its own
