The base is plastic but well made. If you are going to be throwing your weight around it could break but normal balanced use should be fine. I am 205 lbs and have had no trouble.

Q: What bracket do I need for this seat that will be attached to a wooden box on a house boat

I brought the swivel bracket that was recommmed with that model of seat. Seat bolts come with seat, then you would have to bolt and nut through bottom of your wooden box to swivel base.
