Jamieson Brothers Cardunculus Artichoke - 1 in a pack>/strong> The majestic, purple, thistle-like, honey-scented flowers of this stately cardoon are held above clumps of magnificent, deeply cut, silvery-green leaves. Given plenty of space, this perennial makes an eye-catching focal point for a large, sunny, mixed or herbaceous border, or potager, sheltered from strong winds. The flowers are particularly valuable for use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. SOIL PREPARATION Globe artichokes require a well-drained, fertile soil that will need to be deeply dug over before planting. For the best results dig in some compost or manure. PLANTING Plant the roots 1m apart with the top of the root level with the soil surface. CARE In the first year remove any flower heads to allow the plants to establish. Cut back the stems in Autumn and mulch with straw or bark chips. HARVESTING In the second year remove the very top bud and 5cm of stem when it is large and swollen. This will encourage the side buds to grow. Plants will last for up to 4 years. Plant as soon as possible after purchase. Keep in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place until planting. Keep free from frost. Grown from cultivated stock.
