Fine at a low price, but don't pay too much
My first impression -- before even opening the box -- was "wow, this thing is heavy". As far as power protection devices go, heavy is generally better. But, I think the weight coupled with the brand "APC" lead me to an expectation of quality that, frankly, the product does not really meet. It's fine for the price I paid of only $10 and I would have probably been willing to pay up to about $30, but if I paid more than that it probably would have been sent back because it just feels cheap.I am not really using this as a "game manager". Rather, I'm using it for power protection, to increase the number of outlets, and to store the never ending pile of disks that seem accumulate around the BluRay player and TV. I think the product is probably about what I should have expected for a "gamer device", but just does not measure up to the quality I expected as a home theater enthusiast. Too much cheap plastic!I was hoping to use the disk storage trays, but decided against it. The trays feel cheap, they are not captured (i.e. they come all the way out), and it is difficult to keep them all closed except for the one I want. It would probably be adequate for adults and older kids, but I have a 3 year old and thought I would constantly being looking for loose trays under the sofa, so I decided to remove both the left and right tray manager caddies. With the tray managers removed, I was left with two cubbies into which I could easily place a few remote controls and a handful of DVD/BluRay movies in their cases -- enough to save a bit of mild clutter from being accumulated atop the fireplace mantel.Like the trays, the tray managers are also cheaply made. Each tray manager has a door that closes, but there is no real hinge or latch -- just bending plastic. I would expect the door to either fall off or not stay closed after a bit of mild use. And, if dropped, I expect the door would pop open and the trays would scatter about the floor. I might try to use it to keep movies for long car rides, but would not even try to throw the tray managers in a backpack or use them under any other conditions that might subject them to a bit of abuse.I was happy that the gray ears that hold the game controllers did not have to be installed.Electrically, I guess it's fine. It is APC -- I would be really mad if they used crappy power protection components. Without opening the chassis -- which I do not plan to do -- there is really no way to know about the quality of the components inside. Although, I can say is that the power cord does seem nice and robust and what I expect expect of an APC product. The outlets themselves are just molded plastic. I did have a bit of problem inserting plugs at first; it took more force than I expected. But, once inserted, the plugs do seem secure. I don't think I would use it in a situation where it is intended to often insert and remove plugs, but it's fine for things that will remain plugged in.I don't like the power switch, which is a small, round rocker switch. Normally, I prefer rocker switches because they provide more positive on/off appearance, and typically last longer than push on / push off toggle buttons. But, in this case, given the space allotted for the switch inside the protection ring, I think I would have preferred a toggle button instead for no other reason than I found the toggle switch somewhat difficult to use. But, since I don't plan on turning the unit on and off much, and since the switch is also the circuit breaker, I can live with it.All in all, I am keeping it and I do expect that it will provide years of power protection and help eliminate a bit of clutter. I have even thought about buying another unit and using it as a "charging station" to organize mobile device clutter.
