modern update to the original rescue hammer
This is our fourth rescue hammer. We have one in each car plus a couple extras in our 15 passenger van due to the length. This model is far and away my favorite. It looks nice in the car, noticeable in an emergency but not garish like the bright orange ones. Unlike older models that snap into a black plastic tray larger than the hammer itself this one clips onto an unobtrusive holder. The design is much easier to hold than the standard orange hammers. Not only is the grip larger it keeps your hand in place more securely with a piece of plastic that would also serve as knuckle protection should a situation arise where a window needs to be broken. This updated version maintains the seat belt cutting feature. I've had a chance to try it out on an expired car seat that we wanted to make unusable prior to putting out at the curb. It cut the belts more easily than I expected. The belt cutter is really just a bit of razor blade recessed in a groove to keep it away from your fingers. It is possible to get to it so it's not something to attach next to a child's seat but it's still very safe to handle.

A Potential Lifesaver Indeed
A must-have for even the slightly paranoid automobile users. Retention ponds and other substantial bodies of water seem to be everywhere nowadays. If your vehicle slips off the road and becomes submerged in water, this tool will help you survive by enabling you to cut a jammed seatbelt and shatter a side window for a prompt escape. I attached ours to a “rip-away” laniard and tucked this “hammer” away in the back pocket of the passenger seat. By the way, if you pull out the headrests, the tips of their posts are pointy for a reason. They also can be used to shatter a vehicles side window with a sharp strike to a lower corner. Don’t try it on the windshield. It’s made to be shatter-proof.

Other than that looks good. I'll let you know how good it really ...
Mount was a little funky. Other than that looks good. I'll let you know how good it really is if I ever have to use it.

Not Received as Advertised
Amazon site stated it was made in USA. Upon arrival, the package indicated it is actually made in Asia. This is a strictly life saving device. Not helpful to mislead the public on a safety product that may not be built to US standards. If needed, it better work…Amazon needs to do a much better job screening its vendors.

Hope to never need, but glad it's in the car
Having this in the car is a nice piece of mind. With multiple family members (a Trauma ER doc, a couple firefighters, one EMT, and several nurses) whose work brings them in contact with car accident victims on a daily basis, we've all been told to make sure we carry a emergency hammer because they truly DO WORK. Seat belt locks often jam in accident, and being able to get out of your belt can mean the difference between life or death if your vehicle is on fire or submerging. This hammer will be joining a spring loaded window breaker (best option if your car is ever submerged or if you are unable to swing the hammer with enough force to break the windows - think broken arms).Like any safety tool, you should always try to practice with it at least once to familiarize yourself with it. No one wants to test this on their own car, so google your local junk yard and ask them if they wouldn't mind if you tested this on one of their cars. That's what we did, and they were surprisingly nice about it. They see the end result of a lot of car crashes, and thought this was a pretty good idea (the practice). BE AWARE THAT THIS WILL NOT WORK ON WINDSHIELDS (LAMINATED GLASS), ONLY SIDE AND REAR WINDOWS (TEMPERED GLASS).What I like:- It's easier to grip than some rescue hammers that have a very thin handle- The seat belt cutter is on the opposite side of the hammer rather than the bottom, so no fumbling around to change grip direction which could lead to dropping the tool- No chance of children cutting themselves on the seat belt cutter- The included instructions that gave helpful information for what you should do if you ever are in an accident (like to help oldest children first as then they can help unbuckle younger children, cut seat belt diagonally and not straight across, etc.)- You can snap in the ResQMe Escape Tool for key chains into the bottom of this hammer so that you have a spring-loaded window breaker along with this tool should you need it- ResQMe has an excellent website with how-to videos, detailed product descriptions and specs, FAQs, and more to support the owners/users of their products. What I don't like:- I wish the whole tool were the same bright color. While some probably like the fact that this blends in better than a bright color, I would prefer a bright color for nighttime.- You do need to buy a separate, spring loaded version of the window breaker as the best way to cover your basesHopefully you will never need to use this, but it's something that every driver should have as part of their car's safety kit.
