Are there chemicals in the hulls?

To address a number if responses to this question "Organic" doesn't mean chemical or even pesticide free. It means grown without synthetic/manmade pesticides, soil ammendments, or GMOs, if referring to western labeling laws. "Natural" and "Organic" pesticide use is still necessary for healthy crops, otherwise you get an organic buckwheat and boll weevil pillow. Also, as one other person said, everything is made of chemicals. It's the type and quantity you have to be concerned about.

Is this pillow good for a side sleeper?

I love the pillow, but I need to order some extra buckwheat hulls to make it fuller. My husband has one also and his if fuller and he loves it also.

Does anyone know how this pillow compares, other than in price, to the ComfyComfy brand pillow which is also sold on Amazon?

I have 2 Buckwheat Hull pillows from ComfyComfy and received a Zen Chi pillow as a gift recently. I can safely say that ComfyComfy is superior to Zen Chi - but ComfyComfy is about triple the price (and I don't know if it's worth it). CC's cover is an extremely durable canvas-like cotton (important when the fill consists of crunchy (and may be sharp) buckwheat hulls. If the cover is too flimsy and thin, one can feel the uneven and scratchy hulls - this necessitates a sturdy pillowcase cover for the cover. No matter what the quality of the cover, a second pillowcase is necessary (mostly because the case should be removed for laundering). I have purchased custom-made pillowcases for my buckwheat hull pillows from a couple of shops on ETSY that make any size, any color pillowcases in 100% cotton. One is called SewingPoetry and the other IndianLotusCreations and both were great quality, cotton pillowcases. The Zen Chi cover is much thinner/flimsy than ComfyComfy's covers (and a second pillowcase is mandatory (or you will feel those hulls all of the time). A second pillowcase smooths out the hulls completely. No matter what company you go with, they ALL underfill the pillows. Even when you are paying 3x more, the pillow will be saggy and feel underfilled (ComfyComfy's pillows are no different). I had to purchase additional buckwheat hulls for the CC pillows as well as the Zen Chi. At first, the pillows seem SO underfilled there is a temptation to overfill (with the additional buckwheat hulls - purchased separately) but you soon realise that the pillows don't have to be (and really shouldn't be) packed to capacity. I ended up removing some of the hulls that I added to all of the pillows because it just wasn't comfortable to sleep on tightly packed buckwheat hull pillows. A way underfilled pillow is laughable (and all buckwheat hull pillows seem to be quite underfilled). I added close to 1 lb. of additional buckwheat hulls (in one case, I added close to 2 lbs.) to the pillows. I purchased the additional 'refill' hulls on eBy (around $25 for 3 lbs.) but again, they are ALL underfilled and need extra hulls. Having 5 buckwheat hull pillows, the 3 lbs. of extra hulls was the right amount. Thin and flimsy covers on buckwheat hull pillows require a second pillowcase, it's true but you really need a second pillowcase for the super-sturdy canvas ComfyComfy covers, as well. The CC covers are really rough so you'll need to buy a second pillowcase for the ComfyComfy pillows, too. And do NOT waste money on ComfyComfy's pillowcases because it's not worth it. Since I have had to buy additional buckwheat hulls and additional pillowcases for all of my buckwheat hull pillows, I have concluded that it would be more economical to skip the higher-priced ComfyComfy pillows and go for the less-expensive Zen Chi.

does this pillow create brown dust, i bought one and there became brown powdery dust all over the place, and also are the hulls washed.

This is my 3rd buckwheat pillow from this brand/seller and it has absolutely no dust. My only issue with it is I like it a little firmer so I add buckwheat hulls to it. I also add lavender and it is lovely to sleep on.
