Thanks for asking about this item. To my knowledge this train is neither N scale nor HO scale. To the best of my knowledge the wheel configurations are 4-4-0. This represents the 1836 body model steam locomotive American first car the Santa Fe steam locomotive. I hope my answer is of some help. Kind regards

Q: How big are the train cars?

Each car is about 4 1/2 inches long, 2 inches high, and 1 1/2 inches wide. Good train set to play with loose Hot Wheels/Matchbox/Maisto cars.

Q: Does this make noise? If so, can it be turned off?

No. No light, No smoke. I am not impressed with this set. I would not Recommend it I was disappointed as a gift for my grandson. Even if you pay little more it is worth to get some other Train set.
