waterproof map of rome
this is great, I have a map to help me plan my itinerary while in rome. the price was excellent and being able to plan what I want to see and how to get there will save me a lot of time and money when I do get there. not only does the map show the streets but also where the buses go and the subway system, plus all the attractions are shown as well. I highly recommend these maps as they are available for most major cities in Europe. I have the paris map and berlin map too. each of these maps has just about all of the information you will need to let you see the city you are in like the locals, knowing which transportation system goes where and seeing how the attractions are situated lets you plane like a pro.

Another successful trip with a Streetwise map!
I love Streetwise maps, and when I had the opportunity to journey to Rome this year, I added this map to my growing collection of Streetwise city maps. The streets and landmarks are clearly marked-- albeit in tiny print, which is a standard for Streetwise maps. (If you need glasses to read a restaurant menu, you'll definitely need them for this map!) The laminated finish of the map makes it easier to use in wet weather, and the folded size is convenient for a purse or coat pocket. (It'll be too tall to fit all the way into a trouser pocket.) I try to travel with a dry-erase marker to note the day's plans-- with the shiny finish of the map, these can then be wiped away for the next day's route! I know folks have concerns about the small print on the Streetwise map(s), but for me, it's a worthwhile trade for a small map-- no need to unfold (and re-fold) a giant paper map.I started using Streetwise maps in 1996 with New York City, and my collection now includes cities across the U.S. and Europe-- they're my favorites for a reason!

Good map, but found something better
Good detailed map and the lamination made it easy to handle, but I ended up using this as my backup. Google Maps on my phone worked brilliantly in Italy (I have USA T-Mobile service, which provides free cellular data in Italy). The advantage of Google Maps is I don't have to worry about looking for street names, plus it provides explicit walking directions, or the connections for using intra-city buses and trains, my choice.

Great product
As I begin this review, let me point out this is not a city map of Rome. It is a map of the historic district, with a few sections of the city, including the Vatican. If someone is looking for a road map of Rome, you might want something else. That said, this is a great map for someone who is visiting Rome for the first time. Many of the major sites are in 3D, which helps tremendously with identification as you walk the streets. Also, it has stops for the Roma metro as well, which makes getting around Rome very easy using public transit.Great product for a tourist visiting Rome!

Terrifically useful
I just returned from 10 days in Rome, Florence, Venice and these Streetwise maps were spot on. I'm a big walker, and they accurately laid out streets and alleys in a laminated foldout that is easy to use. The print is small, but it's detailed - I can live with that. And the breakout/highlighted maps on places of interest (such as the Forum, Vatican City, main sites in Florence) were very useful. In fact, the Forum detail on the Streetwise map was as easy to follow along as any specialty map I saw. I'd bring one of these along to any major, new city I'm visiting.

Worked for me
I took this map as a backup on my trip to Rome. I primarily walked, took the train and Metro and wandered around on my own, but this map gave me a good idea of approximately which directions I should head and distances involved. The downsides are that the print is pretty small and sometimes the large 'attraction' icons on the map sometimes obscure the streets. In that way, it's about the same as the 'tourist' maps you can get at your hotel front desk. The upsides are that you can get it BEFORE you get to your hotel so you can plan your trip ahead of time, it is laminated (waterproof, durable) and folds nicely for storage in a small bag.

The only map you need
Just returned from eight days of walking in Rome. This is the only map we needed to find our way to everything that was of interest to us. It seems that just about every street and alleyway is listed and shown to scale (which is not the case with the free "tourist" maps). Experienced the joy of just wandering around following our noses to one interesting area after another, always knowing that our trusty "Streetwise Rome" would come to the rescue when we wanted to reach a particular destination. We ventured to the Borghese Gallery, the Vatican, to Trastevere, Palatine Hill, the Colosseum, Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, the Baths of Diocletian and from and back to the Termini Train Station. Including having the map out in the rain on several occassions, it still looks like new. The best thing is, it is only 4" X 8.5" when folded in your pocket and so easy to flip open to use (unlike so many other maps that you must unfold in several directions). The map also has sketches of many of the sights you will be looking for to help you quickly find them. While we only used the Metro once, all the stations are clearly marked. If you want to spend less time folding and unfolding the map and more time enjoying the sights, you may find this product very much to your liking.
