Cold Simmering Neo Western
Let Him Go is a methodical character study, a cold simmer, the story unfolding and revealing in its own time. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane anchor an amazing cast, the direction and screen play from Thomas Bezucha is outstanding, the landscape and visuals are stark and beautiful. Many try but few succeed in creating a neo western with the resonance and style of Let Him Go.

Let Him Go: Kevin Costner movie
This movie was very moving and exciting! A western, older couple tries to bring back their grandson from the family of the wife’s husband taking place in the 1960’s. They are aided by an indigenous young man. Some sad scenes and violence. Mesmerizing story!

The acting and scenery were good but the story was sick and ugly. I don't understand how anyone benefits from a story like this. Probably more of a 2 star film but I gave it 3 stars because it's over.

Sweet and Sour, Neat and Dour
'Let Him Go' is a somewhat tense thriller that is genuinely creepy in certain parts and even ventures ever so briefly into the horror genre, but it is also simultaneously emotionally endearing since this is ultimately a story about the love of grandparents for their grandchild and their going out on a limb and putting themselves in danger to secure his safety. Who isn't thrilled by grandparents' love of their grandchildren? The film really does live up to the naturally high expectations any film featuring Diane Lane and Kevin Costner would satisfy, but all the other participants/players are no less impressive in their phenomenal performances here. Special praise to Lesley Manville whose portrayal of Blanche Weboy, the toxic matriarch of the troubled Weboy family, explains a lot about why this drama unfolds the way it does. Then there is Jeffery Donovan- as Bill Weboy- the subtlety and chill in whose portrayal adds so much to the darkness of this story's tapestry. All told, this story could use a revisiting to flesh out some of the angles that are not explored in sufficient detail. One such case is Peter Dragswolf and his lost horse. I presumed that as horses are said in this story to have souls then this particular lost horse could be the reincarnation of a recently lost son who has found the one native American who would cross paths with George and Margaret Blackledge (Costner and Lane) as they traverse the path to where they believe their grandchild is kept from them. In other words not all parts of this story fit together like hand and glove, but it is still a very worthy effort and I highly recommend a watching.

A Great Moving Movie
Both Diane Lane and Kevin Costner deliver performances here that are award worthy. The movie is a sad tale about a family who lost their only son and then were in danger of losing their daughter in law and grandson at the same time. Their journey is hard, the violence is real and ending not quite what you would expect. It's a good movie and will find its way to our "Play it Again" pile.
