My sun conure was not drawn to this toy as a whole. I've never seen her play with it despite it being in her cage for weeks, even in different places. I somehow expected this but knew this toy was a good value just for its leather (suede?) pieces.I untie a new leather strip every couple of days and offer it to her as a foot toy. She likes to sit in my lap and chew the strips, snapping off little nubs and then fussing around with them. Eventually the strip is just an inch long and I untie another strip for her to play with.The leather strips on bird toys dry out over time, so to prevent that I've removed the toy from her cage and placed it in a Ziploc (airtight) bag to preserve the strips and dole them out as needed.

My Blue Crown Conures were not impressed. They did chew the small leather pieces, other than that, wasted purchase for medium parrots.

I opened the bird toy and the smell hit right away. Just chemical stench. I tried to let it air out a few days and it didn't help.I highly suspect the leather is NOT vegetable dyed and UNSAFE for pet birds.

Great toy for keeping my Yellow Naped Amazon Parrot busy for short periods while I’m watching a show on tv or reading my book. I DONT leave him unsupervised with this toy because he is preoccupied with the yarn and meticulously pulling it apart thread by thread. He definitely LOVES the toy; there is NO Question , and it’s a great toy. He’s just a little Rascal!!! Lol!

But what about what IS actually used to dye the rope and what IS used to tan the leather? I had the same reaction as a previous reviewer about the smell. What is the smelly leather tanned with? Checked the Penn Plax website and the web and couldn't find any info other than about zinc and lead. If I knew what was used on the parts maybe I would feel better about giving it to my bird but I haven't had the nerve to yet.
