Wonderful Overview on Avian Migration!
This is a great book to learn the essentials on avian migration. The text, charts and photos all work together to give an expansive view of the mystery and wonders of why, where and how birds move themselves over great distances every year. As a birder, I will be referring to this book at least twice every year. Beautiful!

Enjoying it very much
I purchased this book just before the spring songbird migration began this year, so I would have a better understanding of the lives of the birds I would be watching. I've been picking it up and reading a few chapters as a time in between my outings to watch the birds. I'm really pleased that it includes information about how climate and habitat impact the lives of specific types of birds, and discusses how human activities can cause both harm and benefit to birds. And as others here have mentioned, the book is very nicely illustrated with diagrams and photographs on nice glossy paper.

Great for first rapid coverage, then lots of research to fill in gapss
This book is beautifully illustrated and covers the world for anyone desiring a very general coverage of bird migrations. However, for data covering the migrations of individual bird species, the book creates deep disappointment. After searching the Internet for information covering the migrations of a host of bird species, just a series of maps showing main migration routes involving different bird species (and easy to include in a book) would have greatly enhanced the value of this work. One of the most valuable maps that I came across, for example, by Bird Life International, shows very clearly the annual migrations to and from of the willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), eastern race (yakutensis), which annually undertakes the longest migration journey of any songbird (11,300 km). As a final comment, it becomes clear that the joint effort of the authors creating the Atlas of Bird Migration would have greatly benefited from consultations with professional map makers and a focus upon a selection of the key migration paths of individual bird species. Very good introduction to bird migration
Lavishly illustrated, and covering most migration routes, this one is a delightful way to start still another chapter in ornithology. Really shows the complexity of all life around us.Just buy it, - your kids will love it too!

Okay
I was hoping for more detailed information on EACH bird, but it was more of an overview. If you're looking for individual information, keep looking.

Impressive....
Got this for my wife for Christmas. She is a serious birder, and requested it. She was real impressed with the overall look and layout of the book. Made a nice gift...

A superbly illustrated publication making information about bird migration routes easily visualised.
Great visual presentation of migration patterns of different families of birds around the world - mostly from a Northern Hemisphere perspective, and with separate chapters for the different continents. Superbly illustrated with annotated maps. A delight to read and dip into.

... Migrations around the Globe then this book is very good - however
If you want to find out more about Bird Migrations around the Globe then this book is very good - however, I would say that the book has a bit of dated feel and look to it in terms of the way in which it is laid out, and in particular the maps of individual migratory birds are somewhat bland with big green arrows on very small maps. The data given has obviously been painstakingly built up over many years of dedicated work by many people around the world - the most surprising fact that I gleaned is that every day of the year there is some bird somewhere on the Globe undergoing a migration. It is always very easy to criticise anything, but overall I was a little bit disappointed with this book. That said, if you are interested in this sort of subject matter it remains a very interesting publication.
