In My Life

The song In My Life by the Beatles has a lot of history with my special needs son. When I saw this book I got goosebumps. It's just perfect. The artwork is meaningful and ageless.

Ran across this book when looking for a gift for a Beatles fan. It’s beautifully illustrated for a beautiful song. Love it so much I have purchased all the different song books I could find by the Beatles. Definitely a collectible I will pass on to my grandchildren!

My 1-3 graders love this book. I have them examine the illustrations - and ask them "what is different in this picture." It starts with a mom and her daughter. We see the daughter growing up by changing the bike color and helmet color. And then the distance from the house is greater. And the trees change seasons. Then the girl goes to college, then HAS HER OWN DAUGHTER. ALL the kids, boys and girls, "Awwwwww" when they see that the STORY BEGINS OVER

I've sung In My Life to my 4 year old daughter nearly every night since she was born. She calls it "Places I remember" and when we hear it on the radio, she says "oh! that's MY song!"So imagine my joy to find a beautiful book that illustrates to her what the lyrics mean to me! Though I've traveled the world and loved many people, nothing and no one I've ever loved compares to her. I had to practice reading it a few times before reading it to her, as my voice broke! The illustrations depict a mother and her daughter, who grows into adulthood and has a daughter of her own that she brings back to visit her mother. I hope my daughter will love this book and song into her own motherhood, if she chooses to have kids. Maybe then she will truly understand how unique a mother's love is for her child.If this helps with a buying decision, the characters in the book appear to be a different race from our family (which is white) but that was an added bonus for us as we look to include books that are not only featuring people of color, but do so in a way that just puts them into nonspecific storylines (i.e. not limited to historical figures, holidays, foreign travel, etc.). A good library will have a little of both - celebrating historical figures that may not have been given their due until recently, but also just every day people who are there because they are a character, not because of their skin color or heritage. This book about a mama loving her daughter/granddaughter the way we do in our family, but happen to look different to us, sends a message to my daughter that might help her relate to others in the future. And for kids of color, it is important to see people who look like them reflected in their books.

There's not much to say, as this is a book that needs to be experienced - for the artwork, for the words, for the way it has all been woven together to produce something precious to have. Enjoy!

As a fan of the song, I bought this book for my son. It was the song I danced to with my father at my wedding and I got this book mostly for the sentiment as my father has since passed away. However, I am a little disappointed in the actual story told. The words are the iconic lyrics that we all know but I found the pictures that went along with it to not really fit well. The pictures are a little boring and don’t show much story as it goes through with the lyrics. Perhaps it’s just me but comparing it to other children’s books I have that are set to songs this one just falls flat. There’s not much vivid color to the drawings and I found myself as an adult not very interested in this book.

If you know the song, you'll want the book. Just one word of caution, if you're reading this to your one and only grandchild, and you're thinking about all the people you wish were still around to meet her, I advise you to have tissues handy for the read-aloud... The words are powerful with a tiny child sitting on your lap.
