Wide-ranging, succinct, accessible, informed.
This is a slender volume ( 118 pages), it is unreferenced and accessibly written. It has 19 brief chapters giving overviews of key elements of feminism, including social class, race, sexual politics, love, violence. bell hooks wears her education lightly and writes with deceptively easy to follow depth and insight; she is a great thinker. A few quotes, "feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression." (p1) "Being a member of an exploited group does not make anyone more inclined to resist." (p93) "Patriarchal violence" - the use of this term in place of domestic violence, "reminds the listener that violence in the home is connected to sexism and sexist thinking." (p61-2) It is thought-provoking and explanatory while being written with novel-like readability. Buy this and 'Your Silence Will Not Protect You: Essays and Poems' by Audre Lorde; two wonderful complementary books that are also beautifully put together in nice covers on good paper. Two great Christmas presents sorted.

easy to read
Simple, easy to read, if lacking nuance in some areas covered.

Quite a let down :-/
An editor REALLY should have gone through this, or even the careful eye of a friend. The book is riddled with mistakes, and it can be quite painful to read at times in ways that it really really shouldn’t be. Putting that to one side, there really isn’t that much substance to each of the essays — too much filler. I was hoping for something eye-opening, something that would make me rethink aspects of my stance as a husband, father of a daughter, etc. But this just didn’t really deliver. Maybe it’s because the book was published in 2000 and things have moved on, I’m not sure… 🤷♂️
