Love Kobo!
Make sure you have the right file type and it runs like a dream. The wrong file type it will go a bit slow. Has great battery life and is easy on the eyes.

Nice E-reader, software leaves a lot to be desired
Despite being an "open" e-reader and running Linux itself, the Kobo desktop software does not work on Linux. Which wouldn't be so bad, but it requires you to setup an account and activate the device before you can use it. -1 star for that.If you do go to the kobo.com/desktop link it instructs you to visit, the download button doesn't work (was going to try to get it running under WINE at least for initial setup). -1 star for thatOnce I jumped through the account/activation hoops, I was able to load my books onto it (it shows up like a flash drive, but only *after* you've gone through the stupid activation process). Now, onto the good stuff:I've got a large collection of e-books, but I've always just read them on my phone. Finally broke down and bought a proper e-reader with the nice e-ink display. Why didn't I do this forever ago? It's got a backlight, but using it under a lamp with reflected light is just so much easier on my eyes and feels more like a paper book. I also haven't read a book written on dead trees in a good minute, so sitting under a lamp just brings back a missing piece of the experience I didn't even know was gone.I also just can't get over how "fake" the display looks. Fake is usually not used to describe something positively, but in this case, it's a huge praise. The text and book cover images just look like they're printed on a sheet of paper and slipped inside to make the device look functional...like a movie prop. Turning the backlight on diminishes this effect somewhat, though (which is another reason I prefer to leave it off).I also love that I can just set it down and not worry about coming back to a dead battery, lol. The reader app on my phone is set to prevent it from going to sleep or turning off the screen, so sometimes I'll set it down to go take care of something else, forget, and come back to a nearly dead battery. To everyone who has recommended these gizmos to me, I finally get it. I know I said reading books on my phone was good enough, but I was wrong. If anyone in charge of the firmware development is reading this, please remove the activation step as well as requiring any kind of account to use the hardware. I don't want to be part of an "ecosystem" or be tied to a manufacturer's cloud service, or, really, have any kind of forced interaction with the manufacturer post-sale. I just want an e-reader that will allow me to add my library files and read them.

NEVER AGAIN
I loved my last Kobo. It lasted 5 years. The one before that also lasted a long time. This time deciding to go eco-friendly and save some money in the bargain I decided to try a re-furbished Kobo. It arrived on May 22. When I turned it on I saw that all of my books were there, but so was a dark grey shadow surrounding 1/2 - 1/3" of the upper right top and around the right corner almost to the bottom which eliminated the top right hand words, the battery icon and one of my favorite and much used features, the right hand tab which marks an important page. Also, the time and date couldn't be changed. It was sent out like this!! Although I was annoyed I desperately wanted to get back to reading and decided to live with these fairly minor (?) annoyances. What a mistake. They were simply a preview of what was to come. It died yesterday- completely - September16. Return it? Nope. I missed the deadline by 2 days. I really thought refurbished meant it had been brought up to a usable level - just 2nd hand. I accept my responsibility in this. It was a big mistake that I didn't return it immediately. So ... if you decide to try a refurbished Kobo, make sure that EVERYTHING works and watch out for the RETURN DATE!p.s. I would LOVE to send pictures but my old computer simply refuses to upload them. Guess it's time for a new computer too. Brand new!!

Why not save the earth ...
and buy a refurbished eReader? This Kobo Clara HD arrived in perfect shape. There was no indication that it had ever had another user. The HD is getting a little long in the tooth (first sold in 2018), but it has all the features I want in a 6" reader -- and perhaps the first really good display. It's a Mark 7, so the basic hardware is still current, and Kobo's firmware updates are still coming. I like the reader, and I like the vendor.

Works great, battery life is excellent, a bit small
I really like this e-reader. E-ink is the way to go in my opinion - in direct sun it's like reading from paper, and the device has a good backlight (just be sure you don't accidentally crank it down to 0% in the dark). Having access to my local library via Overdrive is the bees knees. The only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is the size - it's just a tiny bit smaller than I'd like, and the format is a bit awkward. I ended up putting a popsocket on the back to hold it more easily.

Good product up to this point.
Purchased as an option to my Kindle, which I am very fond of. My library has cut back, at least on the books I choose, on their Kindle options. With the built-in overdrive function this is a good alternative. Just received it 1 day ago so I have not had time to really give it a good review, however, so far I'm impressed.

Works well
It looks completely new, didn't have even a scratch, it was very easy to set up the account and connect to the wifi, page turning is just a bit slow but not too much, I really recommend this
