An Irish-American treasure
Wonderful story and the children are so beautiful! The Irish give Henri's surname the French pronunciation which helps to distinguish him from the noted Irish painter, Paul Henry. Loved the origin of the word "boycott"; leave it to the Irish!

From New York to Corrymore.
Robert Henri isn't as well-known in the UK as he deserves to be; a leading figure in the New York "Ashcan" school of realist painting and a hugely influential art educator, his deft, economical and boldly realised brushwork is a richly rewarding discovery for any painter who relishes the medium. The cover of this slim but informative paperback exhibition catalogue is a little misleading; although there are four landscapes illustrated, the majority of the full-colour plates (47 in all, supplemented by 17 comparative figures in the text and a further 17 works by other artists) are portraits, and most notably the child-portraits Henri excelled at.His painting style was influenced by Frans Hals, loose and dashing but controlled and employing a modern understanding of colour; anyone familiar with Sargent, Sorolla or any of the great portraitists from the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century will, I'm sure appreciate his work. It is breathtakingly instructive painting of masterful quality. There are two informative essays; one on the depiction of the Irish in American art and culture and the second, longer essay deals with Henri's several stays on Achill Island, just off the west coast of Ireland. The Illustrations are excellent in quality and of good size; this is a very satisfying and beautiful volume to look through.Thoroughly recommendable.
