It says the light direction is 'downward', but it is glass and transparent, would this pendant provide enough light in a living room?

You can put up to a 60 watt equivalent bulb in so it depends on the lumens of your chosen bulb. Not sure it would be sufficient in a decent size living room depending on how much light you like! I use more than one.

Does this light have an earth lead?

Yes, this does have an earth lead which is mandatory in the UK for a metal light fitting. Mine is installed in a bathroom and is very nice. Hope this helps. S
