Q: How close does the magnet need to be to switch to work?

The range of area for this switch is so tight and unpredictable, we do not recommend the use of this switch. Every unit we used the switch in needed to be replace with a glass reed switch.

Q: how does this work? Does it need a magnet on it to stay on. Or hit w/ magnet to turn it on, and again for off?

When you approach a magnet the switch changes state. When you move it away the switch returns to its normal position. D'ont hit it. Do not hit it or you will break the glass.

Q: Is any one having issues with the normally closed unit? They seem to fail after a few cycles.

Not using NC units but no issues after 6 months of service - hope that helps.

yes it need a magnet to control the switch, magnetic is close to switch: circuit connect, magnetic is far away to switch: circuit disconnect

Reliable operation with supplied magnet

Bought these to add a momentary action to a ceiling pull switch. The N/C starting condition does have a small resistance (about 3 ohm) but opens reliably and without jitter when the magnet is within 3mm, and releases when the magnet is about 8mm away.I was able to embed the magnet into the base of an actuator in a SPDT ceiling switch, placing the switch underneath the housing and feeding the wires back into the housing where they remain electrically and physically separate from the normal switch action.

Unsuitable for a hobbyist

These require the magnet to be precisely (to the millimeter) aligned and orientated to work. This is probably possible in an industrial or laboratory situation but not for the average hobbyist.

Wicked cool!!!

The media could not be loaded. To be honest I didn't think these little things would do much but they made my project next level cool!!! They worked well even after being baked in polymer clay so they are tough little switches!
