When charging on the car do you connect the negative lead to the negative battery terminal ot the car chassis.

When i turn on set to lifepo4 it shows 24v without battery attached. will it switch to 12v when the battery is connected automatically?

Yes, I would expect it to, although I haven't tried it myself. It will switch to 12V as long as the battery you're trying to charge isn't too far gone.
