Great story about a little girl who learned to accept herself
I first read this book when I was 11, and I've reread it many times since. I especially loved how the girl in the story let go of the image others had of her, and the nick name that went with it, and look back her real name, Rowan. I've always thought that was a beautiful name for a girl, even though it's traditionally a boys' name. The story dragged on in places, but it captured the girls fantasy life well, as well as her determination to create her own sense of self in the face of family problems and mistreatment. I recommend this book!

Well written, heartfelt story.
When I read this as a young girl I enjoyed it but really missed the finer points. As as adult, I LOVE this story. I could not put it down. I highly recommend it. It's about a spirited, misunderstood young girl. My heart went out to her. At the end, my heart went out to her aunt also. It had a happy ending. Definitely a must read.

the girl who ran away
Loved the book. I first read it in 6th grade. This young girl creates a fairyland in her meadow. She lives very close to nature.

One of my all time favs
Read this around age 10 or 12 and it was transporting. The first time I went to England, it felt like I already knew it. I've reread this book a hundred times.
