A Long Awaited Survey of Amazing Boats

This is the book I didn't realize I'd been waiting for. While Maine gets most of the attention in the woodenboat world, this intersecting corner of Connecticut and Rhode Island is rife with legendary boats and immensely talented shipwrights. Tom Verde does a fantastic job in bringing these unique vessels and their very human stories to life in what I hope is an introductory volume. It's been terrific to read the hidden tales of so many boats that I have come to know from the waters around Noank and Mystic -- like Grayling, Kittiwake, Winsome and Aphrodite. I especially loved the incredible history behind Klang II, a boat I pass all the time coming in and out of Mystic Shipyard. Even if you are not deeply into old boats like these, the stories of the people, the artistry, the craftsmanship and the history will pull you in. I hope he is already planning the next collection.

Not because I am featured... this book is good!

The media could not be loaded.  When some one offers toInterview me, I have to trust that the writer captures the essence of what I am saying and how I will be represented.Tom Verde’s writing hit the mark!I welcome others to purchase this book. His ability to provide the reader with a snapshot of the history and lives of each boat featured is a gift!

Connecting us to our love of the sea and particularly New England.

This is a great read for anyone who enjoys coastal New England and the many treasures that grace her waters. Each of the forty boats described here help us understand our history and our deep connection to the sea. And the human stories behind the design, building and voyaging of these beautiful vessels makes it so we can’t put the book down.

So many fascinating stories of these classical boats and their interesting owners

Hard to put down this book with beautiful photos of workboats, sailboats, racing boats, and rowing boats, built between 1884 and 2017. A comprehensive and well researched narrative accompanies each photo and may include descriptions of the construction, the historic context at the time of construction and up until present day, the owner/s quirks and foibles and sometimes the boat’s changing use over time. This is a book to capture the interest of mariner as well as landlubber since there are tidbits for all to enjoy.
