Will this fit a 40 hp yamaha?

We would recommend the short model for the 40HP Yamaha. The short plate works with engines with 30 to 45HP.

Can you adjust the spring so it doesn’t kick out so fast

No. The spring is not adjustable. You could try removing one of the two springs to see what that does, but am not sure.

I am thinking about getting the easy troller short for my 60 hp mercury because the regular would cover the whole prop. what do you think?

Assuming you mount the plate to the top of your cavitation plate the Standard EasyTroller plate will be about 11.5 inches long, the Short about 9 inches long. You want the plate to cover about 2/3 to 3/4 of your prop for best performance, so you can decide which one might work best for you.
