Realistic sound abatement for musicians
This is a practical book. It combines common sense and a depth of experience on the author's part with an introduction to sound treatment materials and construction/renovation methods. It's geared toward working or weekend musicians, those living in residential areas and willing to put more than a little labor and money into practice/recording space. That pretty much rules out apartment dwellers, however. (See if you can get some basement space and put an extra layer of drywall over the entire ceiling.)

Not quite what I was looking for.
The book is fine for what it is aimed at: people who want to have a recording facility in a residential building. However, if you do a lot of music and want detailed information about the minimum soundproofing specs in an apartment building about to be built (so you don't end up at war with neighbors)this isn't the book. "Noise control manual for Residential Buildings" by David A. Harris is heavy going, but certainly presents the complexity of the issues in a professional manner.

Mediocre at best
Purchased this book hoping it was going to give me an in-depth "guide," to soundproofing a room in my home. This book was pretty far from what I thought it would be. It's a thin book, a quick read, and provides elementary explanations of how to soundproof a room; I found nothing unique in this book, and found zero information I had not already found on the internet. I do not recommend this book if you are looking for a guide on how to soundproof a room; this book doesn't provide enough information for me to declare it "useful." I HIGHLY recommend Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros, by: Rod Gervais. It was a MUCH better book, a THICK book, and provided detailed explanations as to the HOWS and WHYS of soundproofing. I just finished my project, according to Rod's directions, and couldn't be happier with the results. Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros
