Beautifully written and engaging
A wonderful story of love, grief, survival, and living alone in a world without your kind.

A Solemn Book of Survival
I read this book when my daughter recommended it because my Dad built his own home and hunted and fished.

Lovely
A quiet and gentle read. Comfortable, and very well written, with beautiful imagery. I'd recommend this just about any reader

It's fiction
Though several small "experiences in the story seemed weak, the over-all was interesting, and makes the reader think. The ending ties the whole story up with a bow, and though there are no illustrations, the reader is left with the impression that there have been. Well done! It was an enjoyable read.

Really 2 and a half stars
The Bear is an interesting novella. Pulls on the heartstrings, a bit of suspense (and I mean a bit); some nice "fantastic" animal characters--though characters and character development is not the strong suit in this book. The author certainly did his survival skills homework (a large portion of the book deals with wilderness survival skills) and the message of man, nature, god (pantheism?) is somewhat thought provoking. However, this is not more than a "good read." Not a great or very good book. The greatly exaggerated reviews led me to believe this would be a fascinating read bursting with exquisite prose. Well, it isn't. Mr. Krivak is talented and works hard on his prose, and this was a quick, breezy, and pleasant read; but there is not much here that is new or startlingly original.

GREAT READ!!
Well written, marvelously concise, vivid characters and great sense of the surroundings in a wilderness place. But it also brought me to tears in this story of loss, grief, recovery and the glories of resilience and adventure...... Captnemo.

A story about love loss and death
I was going to read this on a long plane ride but than god i got to it before the trip because itβs awkward to cry in public and gets really messy in a mask.Using the scale of earth time, the accomplishments, relationships, loves, losses and deaths of a few humans (or all of humanity) are minute and fleeting - but minute and fleeting do not mean unworthy of examination and when properly examined are as complex and significant as the changing of seasons, the rising of the sun or the movement of the tides. After reading it i went to sleep and woke up with some poorly recalled dreams (wish i could recall) but with a distinct feeling of both my own significance and insignificance - made me smile a bit and made it easier to face whatever might come with the day.

Beautiful book
I loved this book. It is so well written. But mostly I love the girl and how she wishes no dominion on the world. Most people try to control everything but she did not. I will remember this book for a long , long time

Calm and steady both during joy and heartbreak
My dear friends! Last night was full of emotion as I turned page after page of Andrew Krivaksβ The Bear. It is set in a dystopian world where the only human beings are a father and his daughter. He teaches her everything he knows about surviving, life and loss, nature, taking and giving. .π» .The girl learns nothing to be useles and nothing to happen without the surroundings to notice. Why it is necessary to move on, even if you canβt see a point..π».I really like stories that will build up emotion without needing to say βI was so hurt, it shocked me...β. This one is like that. Calm and constant it is narrated, and even without saying most things, I felt it. The girl as she saw the grave of her mother and understood loneliness for the first time, the father torn between grief and need to protect is daughter. It is about hope, strength a sheer will and natures mercy and made my cry.π»This one I will definitely read again, and recommend it to anyone interested in my opinion. 5 π

Slow but beautiful
I wasnβt sure what to think for almost the first half of the book. A bit on the slower side for my liking but enjoyed it in the end. It was slow and poetic and I love nature so that element was nice!

A beautiful and surreal story
Saw this recommended by Jeff Vandermeer. I was a little dubious but found the free sample compelling enough to download the rest and buy it properly. I would describe this as a surreal post apocalyptic fairytale about the last few humans on earth, making peace with the natural world around them. It is maybe novelette length, definitely not a full book.
