Mute is proud to announce The Centre Cannot Hold, the fifth album from acclaimed composer Ben Frost, his first since 2014’s landmark A U R O R A. The album was recorded over ten days by Steve Albini in Chicago. An exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation, The Centre Cannot Hold is an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarines into sound. It forbids casual engagement, but rather seeks to engulf those who encounter it.

icy and alien soundscape pods for inter-cranial travel.
The 10th album of experimental ambient electronics from this artist out of Iceland (via Australia) provides icy and alien soundscape pods for inter-cranial travel. The songs are exotic and unusual, but not unfriendly—if you’re open to an expansive and enveloping listening experience. They also have great titles: “A Sharp Blow In Passing”, “Meg Ryan Eyez”, “A Single Hellfire Missile Costs $100,000 USD”, “Healthcare”, and my favorite “All That You Love Will Be Eviscerated”. Gently throbbing auras drift by your ears, leaving a ghostly assortment of shadow-sound trails and exploratory, tentacled audio hugs. “The Centre Cannot Hold” is a beautiful acid-float trip down a hallucinogenic rabbit hole. Recommended for all-in travelers.

Excellent album, maybe even my favourite of 2017.
