Dr. Yessis is a trailblazer....but this book is just ok.
This book is OK....just OK. Dr. Yessis is a treasure trove of athletic knowledge...and in the end, he is absolutely right....The standard American "athletic training" program is suited for a body builder or power lifter, not an athlete. That said....this book is not excellent, rather just OK. I think it is too sweeping....would be better if it were more specific to a singular topic....it is hard to write a digestible book that covers jumping, kicking, throwing, running and lifting (among others) all at once.Dr. Yessis is a trailblazer and has forgotten more about athletic performance that most people know. I just don't like the nonspecific nature of this book. Do yourself a favor and listen to him speak on YouTube or read any of his articles. You literally cannot go wrong...his span of knowledge is second to none. He has dedicated his life to the study of athletic performance.

Great minds think alike.
I have been arguing with people for a long time that the American system is flawed. I have always argued that children need more skill development and less competition. Finally, I have found someone that sees things the same way I do. Now all we have to do is get our PE teachers, coaches, and college professors that teach movement education to read this book and make changes in the American way. I have enjoyed several of Dr. Yessis' books and this one is very well written as well. This book and "Secrets of Soviet Sports Fitness and Training" are must reads.

The Bible of Sports Training
To the present day and probably for many years to come, this is best sports training book ever written. For all athletes who are tired of being destroyed on the field by more genetically gifted athletes, the author is literally handing to you on a plate of how to be able to leave them in your rear view. For athletes who are tired of being misguided by their sport and strength and conditioning coaches, Dr. Yessis in this book allows you to take your career in your own hands and do things you never thought possible. Leaving no stone unturned, this book should be the foundation for all in university sports education programs. Before coaches can be called a "coach" they must read and understand this book to the point of memorization. There is no other book that bridges the gap between the complicated, ambiguous sports literature and theory, and practical application into actually making better athletes. With his extensive background in biomechanics, kinesiology, and physiology, Dr. Yessis, in language easy enough for a 10 year old, shows you the most efficient technique for your sport. He combines this with exercises that help you learn that technique, while continually increasing the speed (or endurance) of it, in a rational and holistic training program. This book is seriously underrated and has not received the recognition it deserves. If there is one book you should read if you want to get better as a coach or athlete, Build a Better Athlete is the one.

Helpful manual for serious athletes
Even though I classify myself as a "recreational runner," I still take my training and performances very seriously. I found Dr. Yessis's book to be extremely helpful and inspiring in terms of tailoring my present workouts and looking forward to developing new ones.Much of the information the book may seem like it's for a professional athlete or for younger people who are starting out on their fitness journeys, but don't be mistaken: there is plenty of practical guidance and information here for athletes of all fitness and skill levels.Definitely a good addition to your workout library. Maybe you should even consider giving a copy to your coach or trainer!
