In the Company of the Poor: Conversations Between Dr. Paul Farmer and Father Gustavo Gustierrez

Clear and insightful
Paul Farmer is one of the persons I most admire. His work, dedication, and clarity about the issues that plague our societies are incredibly eye opening. Most of us realize that something is not right with our societies, but we have no idea how this happened or what to do about it. Paul Farmer is very clear and makes us realize the systems in place meant to keep the poor poorer.

Life-changing and Inspiring
This book, a dialogue between a doctor and theologian, converges on the idea of the preferential option for the poor and their liberation from early and unjust death. The concept of accompaniment is powerful and gives an Avenue of hope.

What a wonderful book with simple and clear commentaries by two of the seminal figures of the cause for global social justice in the 20th/21st century. This is a most enjoyable read which I will use with my college classes this fall.

What the world needs
The articles, speeches, and interviews in this volume open a way to look at the relationship of the rich world to the poor world with both compassion and expertise. One of the first liberation theologians, Gustavo Gutiérrez, is in dialogue with Paul Farmer who has done much in medical work in Haiti, Perú, and elsewhere.Worth careful study.

Not a breeze, but an important and compelling topic
This is fairly serious and scholarly stuff, compared to what I usually read. But I found propositions put forth by Father Gutierrez and Doctor Farmer to be compelling reminders that we all have certain responsibilities to each other -- being neutral is not an acceptable option -- and that there are many ways to practice liberation theology with medicine Paul Farmer's particular choice.

Dr. Paul Farmer at his most profound
A great text. The book goes back and forth between Dr. Farmer and Friar Gustavo Gutierrez. In this text Farmer comes out and says it all. He reinforces and builds on his philosophy for helping the poor and destitute sick or rather accompanying them. He does this by referencing many outside texts and some older texts of his own, it is in this book Farmer "comes out" as a christian. While I believe this has always been evident in his prior texts, they always seemed more secular. The appeal of this book is that even if you are not Catholic or Christian for that matter you can get on board with their philosophy, in fact Farmer bluntly welcomes those from all faiths.

Very interesting reflexion.
This book is a great example of humanitarian and human skills. It learns us to better understand the hard situation of the poor people and what some courageous people have achieved. Great.
