Building a dock (saltwater) and needed the extra protection for the joists, as SW Florida can be brutal to wood (even marine grade pressure treated wood). Tried three different brands before landing on this one and let me tell you that I just don’t understand any of the reviews for this that say it doesn’t stick. Unfortunate that people who don’t think things through post negative reviews because I almost passed these up. So frustrating! Listen people, if it’s pealing up, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!!!! Take a moment to wipe or brush off dust and dirt with a DRY cloth or broom. Seems crazy that I have to point out that dust and dirt will cause you problems. ALSO, the directions (yes, some of us actually read directions) state that prolonged direct contact to sun light can cause pealing. Guess what? Before I taped up the entire dock frame, I tested this tape on a couple of spots on the joists of my dock and let it sit in the bright Florida sunshine for three days with NO pealing. So it performed better than the manufacturer claimed. This is SUPERIOR joist/butyl tape out of the four major brands I tried. Here are some suggestions to get the best performance out of this tape. CLEAN THE SAW DUST AND DIRT OFF OF THE JOISTS WITH SOMETHING DRY BEFORE TAPING THEM. It doesn’t take much, just a little dusting. Then to be safe, TAPE SMALLER SECTIONS AT A TIME. DON’T tape off the entire deck/dock frame. Tape a section, put your decking down, then tape another section, then repeat. Even though I had no issues with pealing, this can ensure that your tape doesn’t get prolonged exposure to sun light as the manufacturer indicates could happen.

Overall it works well to keep water away from your beams, though you may need staples to hold it in place on vertical surfaces or on edges if you want it to be a tight fit. For my purpose, I'm using it on a drop beam where the joists are resting on top of the tape. Tape is somewhat stuck to the beam on it's own, but isn't really stuck on the edges. It likely would stick better if I hadn't installed on a 40 degree day. I tried to run it on the vertical edge of the beam but it really isn't sticking well, will use staples there. This tape does work, the paper backing came off easily (some have complained this is an issue with other brands), and its protecting my beam, so I'm happy enough with it. Just would prefer the glue worked better at lower temperatures.

This was the second time I ordered this item. First time tape didn’t stick as good as this pack. Possibly newer item.

yes, they will buckle a bit under intense sun, but you have to spend more time when installing it, making sure it stretches a bit and gets pushed down.don't install it way before laying deck boards or if really hots days are coming - 85F plus. will leave a lot of glue residue behind, meaning it will be some elbow grease required if one changes their mind about location.Other than that, performing well - try to install it in full length, vs small runs, but then you have to make it tight and snug

Decided to try this joist tape because it was significantly less expensive than the last product I purchased. Big mistake. I should have known better The tape is VERY thin with very little rubberized coating. Compared to a different product I used on another deck, this one is half the thickness and the top side almost feels like it is made of paper. Also... The adhesive is AWFUL. I cleaned the joists and allowed to dry for 2 days. Tape went on easily, but when folding over the sides of the joist, it just wouldn't adhere. The next day, sections that looked like they stuck, ended up peeling back. Not happy. The instructions mention using "fasteners". I ended up having to go back with a staple gun and tacking down the tape every 18" on both sides of every joist. If you dont mind having to squeeze a staple gun a few hundred times, then have at it.... I'd prefer not to. Not sure how long it will last, but I won't be buying this product again.

Added this adhesive to the replacement stair stringers to assist in shedding water and extending the life of the stringers.
