A Sourcebook in Indian Philosophy

A classic for those who want to understand indian Philosophy
I was loaned this book by a friend, because I am interested in Indian, especially Hindu, philosophy. I found it so interesting and helpful that I wanted my own copy to read and annotate. ( After all, I couldn't write in hers!)

and this book has been an excellent experience! Great
I've read philosophy for some years, including Eastern philosophy, and this book has been an excellent experience! Great, concise picture of important works produced by India thousands of years ago but still valid if what you're looking for is something more than the discussion of theories not related to your daily, practical life. Although not a religious person, for the first time in my adult life I've started to find many, rational ways to reconciliate intuition and reason (the old Western, mainly fictious, dichotomy between heart and mind), and that's a lot! I recommend reading and re-reading, and studying and even making intimately yours (by heart) many of the teachings you'll find in A Source of Indian Philosophy

Still the definitive book
I don’t know why nothing with newer commentary has been created since I was in college, but it was neat that a child needed the same text that I had used. I know it’s a book that I held onto!

A Compendium of Actual Source In Indian Philosophy
While I admittedly have only skimmed through a few chapters, this book appears to be genuine in it's findings and not biased or of a political agenda. Some of you reading this may be familiar with Alan Watts. He's one kind of mystic and teacher, the spiritual entertainer who gives you his take on this source material. This is the source itself, I highly speculate, if not - very close to a compendium of Indian philosophy through the ages. Of course, one can begin chronologically with the Rig Veda, but if you find that in a book store most likely it'll be a compendium itself! The Rig Veda is somewhere around 1000 separate "hymns" and each one is at least a page... not to mention there are 3 other Vedas. All in all this is a nice compendium, and a good book to travel around with and read wherever you may have idle time. Especially if you're the philosophical type.

A Sourcebook in Indian Philosophy
First allow me to say I LOVE philosophy! But I chose only 3 stars as this is above my understanding, even as a grad student. My professor appears to understand what he has doctored in but he cannot convey the understanding to the students. I am not the only student having difficulties. If the professor could thoroughly teach the subject better it would be very interesting to me. Myself and another student have sought out guides to better understand certain passages and terminology. I highly recommend a study guide! When I sell this book back, along with the other two required for the class (have not addressed those readings yet) I will be including notations and a pdf version of a study guide. If all of the book was understood in a clear fashion it would have been worth the money. But I could not find a used book and it was not all clear. Some of the literature was crystal clear. But the rest was not.

Authoritative Masterpiece
As the name suggests its a first hand view of Vedas and Sutras of hindu shat darshan, along with a commentary, as opposed to a derivative reflecting an opinion of the author. Wish there were more on Indian philosophy like this. Dr. Radhakrishnan gives it the credibility much needed when reading such an important subject, and Moore does a brilliant job of organising, articulating and simplifying things. Very expensive book, yet worth a lot more than the price tag.
