I was disappointed with this book
I was disappointed with this book. I'm a VMware and systems administrator not a DBA. The recent book from VMware press on virtualizing MS SQL Server had lots of technical advice on how to build a VM and make it perform well for SQL Server. Virtualizing Oracle seems to be aimed only at DBAs and doesn't offer nearly as much advice to VMware administrators. Some of the advice they do suggest is simply horrible. For example, early in the book they have a section that suggests turning off unnecessary OS services. On Linux they suggest turning off iptables and cron as unneeded services! Turn off my firewall and all of the OS's automatic jobs? Clearly nobody with system administration experience was asked to review that part of the book.Bottom line, if you're an Oracle DBA this might be an awesome book for you. If you're a system administrator or a VMware administrator I would pass it by.

I found this book to be very helpful in the broad area of database virtualization as well as the specific concepts pertaining to Oracle running on virtualized infrastructure.Virtualization was a pretty new concept at the company I work for and almost every time that I was confused about a concept or having a problem, this is the book that I reach for. I have spoken with many people over the past few years who thought they understood these concepts but in reality they did not. With this book I have been able to develop a thorough understanding of VSphere and how it is the perfect platform for Oracle. I was particularly impressed with the chapter(12) that covered case studies as sometimes it helps to know what other successful companies have done. I have been an Oracle DBA for 20 years and now I feel comfortable with virtualizing my entire Oracle footprint.

Extremely Helpful!!
This is the go to book for anyone who has anything to do with Architecture or Administration of either a VMware Virtual Infrastructure hosting Oracle Applications & Databases OR an Oracle DBA who wants to learn about the shift in the industry for running Business Critical Databases. While the DBA learns the art of adopting the highly scalable and resilient Virtual Infrastructure, the VMware Admin/Architect knows the Do's & the Don'ts of Virtualising Transaction & Resource hungry Databases.Apart from the tips and tricks, you also learn about handling objections, getting the required support and demystifying the FUD in the market about virtualising databases in general. This angle of the book would help consultants, pre-sales and sales professionals involved in large scale datacenter transformation & virtualization as well. Thanks Kannan & Don for sharing your experiences!!

Virtualization guide for Oracle DBAs..
Virtualization is the next big thing in Oracle databases and there are lots of contradicting and confusing material in the web, both from technical front and marketing.. With Oracle being synonymous with database, VMWare is synonymous with virtualization. This text from Kannan and Don will help in you in understanding Oracle specific virtualization tricks. This book is targeted someone with Oracle Database experience and helps to virtualize the databases with vSphere. If you are VMware guy looking to learn internals of VMWare, you might be disappointed. On the other hand if you are an Oracle DBA considering VMWare for your databases, this is awesome.. you will love the coverage of VMware specific to Oracle..

By far the best book I've read on how to virtualize Oracle on VMWare. It's for DBAs as well as virtualization experts. The detail is just about right.
